Frenchy or anyone else, I have tried to find out if pontoon bridges using the
Floßsäcke 34 would hold a 38(t) tank?
I have found this image, but the bridge is built with wooden boat "pontoons."

This one is a 35(t) and is using wooden pontoons:

Hi Bill
I haven't found such picture, but this one is worth a look (from this interesting thread
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=168276... if you're into
Pionere stuff

) :
I guess such a combination should be heavier than a 38(t)...

According to Chris Ellis in German Infantry and Assault Engineer Equipment, an old Bellona publication, the Grosser Flossack had a payload of 2 and 3/4 tons. This is born out by photos showing what looks like a Pak 38 being transported in a single boat in the 9SS unit history. How this relates to a bridge made of them I don't know. In Ruckmarsch Then and Now, there is a set of photos showing a class 2 raft made from two Grosser Flossack transporting a staff car over the Seine.
Chamberlain and Doyle's Encylopedia gives the weight of a 38t as 9.5 tons. Given that the weight would be spread over 3 or 4 boats, I reckon it could be done.
