101 Airborne Div Humvee

Hello everyone, I have been modeling for about 40 years. I am starting to build again after quite a few years away. I need some help with a build. I am building an M1025 that took part in the operation that resulted in the death of Uday and Qusay Hussein. I would like to find out if anyone has any information on how the unique rear bumpers on these vehicles were made. I also want to know if I could use the M240 mount that comes in the Blast Humvee Set BL35050K for one of these vehicles. Thanks everyone for the inspiring photos!

Looking forward to this build! Peter Samofalov offers a TOW ITAS control box on the Shapeways 3D store to match the two (east and west) 101st shooters. He is in the process of working up the ITAS sight as well to replace the older Tamiya M1046 one. I would suggest looking at the Live Resin offerings for mounts and SAWs if those trucks are the ones you are looking into?

Guess all have seen these as well?

I have seen the middle picture but not the others. It looks like the weapon in an M249 SAW, not an M240. It also looks like it is on a swing arm. Also, from these and other photos, I only see the bumper on one truck. I am doing one with the M2 so that I can use my Mission Models .50 cal shell casings and links.

I have another question. This one is about the smoke grenade launcher. What controls it, and how should I route the wire?

Yes. I would say it's a plastic stock SAW on a swing arm like what Live Resin makes. This is the best I can tell of the smoke launcher...
beware of those Mission Model 50 cal links...You will go blind!!! lol

My best guess is it runs straight from the base to the roof seam. That's what IŽll do with it. Thank you for the help.

I know it's a different system, but that might help: http://www.hmmwvinscale.com/dischargergrenade.htm

How about theses?

I didn't have these either, thank you! Now I just have to pour over them. The swing arm mounts seem to vary from vehicle to vehicle. Some seem to use a simple pintle and others use part of an M240 mount that is too long for the M249. The swing arms resemble the current SA style mounts but with a lot less external hardware. The one common thing on the 249's appears to be the use of a small side mounted ammo box, not the one that hangs below the receiver. I think I am going to just use a belt though.

Eric,
Although the walk-around on my website shows the LVOSS mounted on an M1151A1 Armament Carrier, the LVOSS (Smoke Grenade Launchers)are similarly mounted on the legacy M1025/M1026, etc. Armament Carriers.
The LVOSS are fired from inside of the vehicle via a finger actuated switch.

Thank you for great info. Ten years ago I spent some time here looking at builds but didn't join. I am recently inspired to build again because of what I see here. I am working on two trucks based on the Tamiya kit. One is the M1025 an the other will be a GMV from early in the OIF campaign. I am working them at the same time beacuse I can do everything twice when it is still fresh in my mind.

This is a view of the scene from the air including a TOW shot during one of the overhead passes. Gives an idea of the layout of where the different trucks were at the final moments. You have to watch it a couple of times to get landmarks.

The History channel has a video from Mosul 2003 event, but I am still looking. I had collected some screen shots at one time. Hope this helps. All the best - Stuart

Stuart, the truck I am going to do is the M1025 from the second shot. It is the one in all of pictures that is littered with shell casings, links, and ammo cans. I also has two large Alice packs on the rear of it. Thank for the new picture!
