Pop quiz guys. Anyone know what this is? Or more accurately what it WILL be?

Enjoy.

Maybe you could place a figure beside it to establish scale/size.

British Army canvas collapsible assault boat. 12 feet long with a 10 troop plus two sapper capacity(allegedly) I think 7 fully loaded guys could squeeze in maybe.

I was gonna say it could be the gondola under an observation balloon from WWI. Are these the ones used in the river assault crossing at Nijmegen during Market-Garden?? Do I detect a water dio/vignette coming??

The gondola thing is a logical guess, yes. But it is the beginnings of a canvas boat and yes,it will be used in a planned scene from Nijmegen and my Regts crossing of the Waal by the power station.
Just read the "Battle of the Bridges" covering that part of the 504PIR s history and am kind of stoked. I have also wanted to challenge myself by doing a water centered theme.

Seeing the boat got me thinking of that scene too!
I would have guessed conning tower platform from a U-Boat too though, but now its confirmed as a boat I remember how they looked in

In the book by Cornelius Ryan, these boats were described as pretty flimsy, with fold-up slats to hold up the canvas sides, and offered zilch in protection. It was an amazing feat just getting them into and across that river.

Alan,Karl and Jack,
Yep,it could be mistaken for a u-boat thing but...nope. I wanted to try something with water again and actually my last thing with water was a u-boat theme a long long time ago.
I just read the "Battle of the Bridges" and got the urge to make one of these boats. I can't get the image of Maj Cook, the Bn Cmdr, out of my head as he rowed across in the first wave saying the "Hail Mary" the whole way. He was unhappy with the way Robert Redford portrayed him in the movie BTW.

Nice to have you onboard brother. What is even more amazing to me is this is the same Regt that not only made this crossing but later on during the Bulge assaulted Cheneux across open barbed wire cattle fenced fields enduring the direct fire of 3 flak tracks and numerous MG42s.
Strike Hold is a worthy motto.

Added two runs of stiffeners as per the prototype last night with the headless horseman for size reference.

This was my last water dio and interestingly enough also has the u-boat thing.

Hi Jerry - just wondering whatever happened with this little boat? Sounded like you had another of your "weekly watching mandatory" builds underway? Don't mean to be a pain - just curious.....any updates?
Cheers

Thanks for checking in NIck,
I have nothing new to put up here as of now because I am in the middle of a real life dio. Painting a bedroom in our palatial residence here. The walls were rather damaged and took a lot of prep work plus two coats of primer! Putting a color coat on today and then still have the trim work and door replacement to get to. Fun times.
Gotta keep the lady of the house happy though,

I have done a few experiments with different things to use for the canvas sides. When I am happy with something I will get some pics up for you.

Yay, a kewpy doll! And because I am in the UK (though not from it, being a Kiwi) I'll ask "what is a kewpy doll"?
