The paint job looks great! I'm sorry you gave up on the zimmerit. If you are going to use milliput in the future, you can use water to thin it while you work. The process is to keep dipping your tool into water, and using pressure to make the excess putty and water move away so you can scrape it off. It's messy, sloppy work.
Another material to consider for zimmerit is modelling paste which is available from art supply stores. It's non-toxic and dries slowly enough to work. It also chips the way zimmerit chips.
