Those look great! Is there a tutorial or show-to guide?
Thanks for the compliments! Both are first time attempts, so your comments mean a lot!

That feather looks perfect. The overall scene has really come together too.

This is a first attempt at vines.
I know that the center needs to be green so I will be fixing that.
Also, nothing is glued down.
I am asking for input as to 1) appropriateness of the vines in this setting; 2)am I on the right track and 3) is it worth continuing and to what extent (as in how many vines is too much)?
Your comments and criticisms are always welcome.

I may be wrong but I think most vines hang straight down ? Ones this big would be pretty heavy. I have seen them personally but always hanging from broadleaf trees. They of course go from tree to tree as well. Have you tried the mighty Google ?

Just the advice I was looking for, Jerry.
Do they fit the scene? I also have a bunch of thin stuff that make work well.
Any other thoughts about appropriate usage?

Patrick , the vines look great just don't think they would be on the beach , usually deeper in the jungle/forest .
Google jungle vine photos , ......... found some cool stuff .
You could bring a wall of jungle growth up at the back of your build and that would work .
Keep goin man .

Yep ! That's the perfect ticket. Put a wall of foliage along the back of your dio to intimate the encroaching jungle. Leave a small path open maybe ? Access to the dig site? The vines could hang there but straight down.

I am throwing in the towel on attempting to make an IPMS contest this weekend.
Two reasons (and I am not fishing for compliments just letting you know how I feel): 1) lack of self confidence. This is my first diorama and while I have had tons of excellent advice and feedback, I just don't want to know how others would react, 2) I know that only I know where all the mistakes are (and how to fix them for next time around).
Which brings me around to this conclusion... I may shelf this work as a learning experience and be proud of what I have done and learned in the way of diorama considerations, rusting and weathering techniques, making water and waves and palm trees from scratch and thinking forward!
Isn't that the lesson we should strive toward in this "hobby"? I am not saying I am frustrated but I think I want to call this one close to done and let it rest for a while. I will cover it, build a base for it and let it ferment for a while. I have some other ideas and I am proud of what I have accomplished. Just might be time to move onto another project after digging out my new hobby space. I have shelves to build and all kind of things to put away.

Patrick,
I think you should go to the show with this one-- but keeping with the theme of an archeological dig might be rough without the figures to go with it, so I think I'd remove the modern stuff and just go with the theme of a rusting hulk in the jungle, unless you can finish the figures in time. Never miss an opportunity to attend a show!-- there are so few of them anymore. I don't attend shows to win trophy's or ribbons, that's satisfying yes, but there is so much more to displaying your work-- it's the ability to talk to others and get opinions in person, see others work and get ideas, and to strive for better techniques. When I go to a show I use the "Russell Wilson approach"-- "Why not me"! or "I could do that too". So I recommend you pack this up and get to that show. I have several half finished works in my storage space because of similar thinking. I've found we are often our own worst critics, so on occasion I bring one out and finish it. By the way-- I sent you an email a few weeks ago regarding a new project, and included photos of one of mine-- don't know if you got it. That's a dio that went through the same thought process you're going through now.
VR, Russ

Patrick- I agree with the comments above as you should go for it and put this out there! You get new contacts and talk ideas face to face. You have the advantage in competition of having one of the most original ideas I have seen for armor. Most impressive work! Be proud and share!

Russ,
Thanks for the good advice and words.
I don't have any kind of base to cover the [auto-censored]ty looking sides and I really don't have the capabilities to get it "show ready". The Styrofoam sides show and that is not a look I like to present. That is the main reason I am throwing it in for Saturday. I was out to buy a brad/pin nailer and they didn't have it on the shelf and I took that as an omen since I really won't have time Friday... well, maybe I will.
So let's move it over into the maybe category. Let me sleep on it and see what happens tomorrow.
Like I said, thanks for the good words!

Thank you, Mr. Gillespie, for your kind words.
As I explained to Russ, I need to see if I can get some kind of base built around it... if I can get the angles cut on some boards, I might be able to double stick them in place... but I am not sure. Will see what I can come up with in the next three days.
Thanks again! I appreciate your comments!

I never got the photos but that is where I am headed next. Who knew a 1/72 helo would be 16" long? Will consult on it with you and would love to have an accompanying build. That will be next with the water project for next spring! I am NOT giving that idea up!
Resend the email with the photos, please!

Patrick,
I'm with Jerry on this, as I said, sometimes we are our own worst critic. On the other hand, I felt you'd at least place with this one, it's so well done and unique. I'm very glad you "took the plunge" but I didn't want to tell you to do something you weren't happy doing either-- I'm glad you went and you can be proud of your work. What did you finally end up using for a "wrap" around the base? It looks great!! It looks like it might be black construction paper, but held with a piece of tape-- if so you can make it permanent with some Modge Poge Decaupage solution-- just make the join on the corner. I use this method for "themed" mini dios all the time-- downloading photos and printing on bond paper, wrapping the base and sealing with decoupage.

Tim, Jerry and Russ,
I am so surprised because of a number of things; 1) not having done armor since being a kid let alone all the rusting and weathering, 2) having never done water, 3) the palms trees were a complete crap shoot and 4) I just don't exude a ton of selfconfidence in this situation.
As to the base, I thought that would sink me for sure. It is black construction paper and I couldn't find the modgepodge although I know we have some in the house.
Thanks again, guys. The last contest I entered about 20 years ago had a horrible ending even though I had won outofb0x and didn't even know it (IPMS Nationals, Dallas). Because I didn't attend the awards dinner, the organizers didn't want to give me the trophy and wound up screaming at me about being an ingrate in the middle of my favorite hobby shop. It was an experience I never wanted to repeat. So, my hesitance is well deserved.
Thanks to all of you for all the encouragement. This one is going on the shelf for a bit until I get my figure skills up to snuff during the winter. But I will be moving onto another project in tandem with Russ. He is a great inspiration as are all of you!
Thank you again!

Ok so I guess you are calling me out on the whirlybird stuff huh? Just don't expect "tandem" to mean I'm going to work fast on this one! And I'm still a Luddite at posting photos too, but I can create links! For those of you who don't know what Patrick and I are talking about, he has a terrific idea for a Helo Diorama with whirling blades, and I've had a stalled Helo diorama in the works for about three years now with whirling blades-- and for those of you who think this needs to go over on Aeroscale-- relax, because there will be a few surprises, involving some ground pounding things-- both from real life photos by the way. Stay tuned!

Don't think I have ever commented on this thread before but I have been following it with great interest. A well deserved congratulations on a very well executed concept. I know that at times you seemed to agonize over what to do and where to go next with the theme(s)that you had in mind. In the end I think you made the correct decision in agreeing with some of the others to go with just a rusted hulk scene. In this case less was definitely more. And as someone else has pointed out we tend to be our own worst critics. Again congratulations and well done.
