The Tamiya CCKW is inexpensive so I really want to get it. Could it have been used to hull the M2 105MM??? I'm just in a big artillery kick right now.

The CCKW353 could pull the 105mm howitzer, but usually the short wheelbase CCKW352 was used. Hobby Boss offers this version.

Nuts!!! They want $20 more for the Hobby Boss one!!! Maybe next month I will get it. I just bought the Diamond T and the M1A1 155mm yesterday and today my wifes starter in her car stopped working so I have no money left. I can't win!

The HOBBY BOSS SWB CCKW 352 and LWB CCKW 353 Hard Cab kits are fraught with dimensional and "shape" errors. I've had to side-step these kits in favor of the old ITALERI Hard Cabs- The only REAL problem with those old kits are the Wheel/Tires, which should be discarded in favor of much-improved resin replacements, available from various sources...

Hello All,

The M5 kit has been available for over two years now, with a retail price of $109.95. You can see the kit here:

I found that out a few hours ago while I was reading the reviews.

If the dimensional errors really bother you (I don't find them that noticeable when the vehicle is not compared next to a Tamiya or Italeri version), you could always get a Tamiya (open cab) or Italeri (hard cab) CCKW and swap the cab out on the Hobby Boss short wheelbase CCKW. You would then have both and could use the long wheelbase for something else. I would just go with the HB kit as-is.

By now everyone is probably tired of seeing this one but given the topic I had to chime in one more time.

Scratch built 7 1/2 ton Mack NO in 1/35th scale and back dated WWII AFV Club 155 with M1 Limber.

You know I cannot ever remember seeing an M54 hard topped cab! I'm sure they made them somewhere, but never was around one. Noticed these guys moving the gun without the road canvas, so they must be staying black top highways. Also see they left the firing lock in the breech. Must be a training unit.

Gary,
We had a few hard top cab M54s in the 9th DIVARTY in 1981-- but they were on the way out. In my last Korean tour, the unit I commanded had two M54s with hard top cabs-- but they were highly modified railroad switchers. I have a photo of me standing by one of them at Pusan AD. They were very unique, with a concrete ballast on the rear deck, railroad wheels, a sanding unit behind the cab (for rail traction), and of course, a rail coupler at the tow pintle. We used them to switch rail cars at the two depots, Pusan and the rebuild facility at Camp Carroll. I've always wanted to build a model of one, but alas, I have yet to locate a mainstream kit of an M54, yet we have tons of German and even modern Russian stuff now.

Gents, this has been good reading. I have a lot of the US towed artillery but none of the Prime Movers other than the M4 HST. Through reading here and seeking pictures, I know what kits I need to seek out in the future.

Sure do wish they'd come out with the big guns for the M35 tow'r...in 1/35th. Perth's article on the M35 is nice...build up a really sweet hauler...but...nothing to haul.

I will pick up the Hobby Boss SWB...errors and all. Shame I got rid of the resin SWB conversion some time ago.

Thank you all....I look forward to seeing the comments.

Yep - I made those wheels with the intention of making a whole 240mm Howitzer in towed configuration, but even with the thinnest shells the SW prices are very steep! (Somebody was looking for the correct wheels on a forum at the time.) I CADed up basic shapes for the rest of the gun parts for both loads (tube and cradle travelled on separate trailers), but need to spend at least another month of working days to flesh them out with full details, and that'd take me AGES to get round to at present. The idea was to get one printed, then offer it as a master for resin casting, but it'll take some mighty deep pockets...

And I also CADed the parts for the 8" Gun barrel too, since they share the same cradle etc.

Some day when I have enough money to take a month off...

Here is a photo of Alex Hills's beautiful and extensive rebuilding of the Wespe kit into something that more truly resembles a Mack NO. Amazing job! Kudos Alex.

Thanks to Alex's fine work I see even more detail I still need to add to my Mack.

I need a small US flag on the passenger side windshield and a bright yellow bridge plate out front. Also air lines and red and yellow glad hands at both ends of the vehicle.

There is some talk that Mirror might do a Mack NO in 1/35th but nothing confirmed at this time. One can only hope.

I can see the want and need for the hard top in Korea, but I never saw one state side as well. Learn something all the time!

As for an M54 and it's predessors; we need them all. What's odd is that you see U.S. trucks all over the world, but nobody wants to kit one (where's my M37???)
Agree with, as a conversion for the M54 would be really nice. Plus most factory gun trucks that used a quad fifty were on the five ton chassis.

reason I said training unit, was there's no joy in taking a sand filled breech apart. That's why we always covered the breech with home made canvas covers.

Your 3in gun can also be towed by an M3 half-track if you are so inclined. Working in that very combo right now

The 57mm can also be towed by an M3 Half-track, which seemed to be the prime mover of choice in June 1944 according to Osprey's US anti-tank artillery 1941-45. It also has photos of the M2 Half-track towing the 57mm in North Africa. VR, Russ
