The Osprey Elite series Inside the US Army today is excellent for the late 1980s-early 1990s.

The Osprey US Combat equipments 1910-1988 is another excellent resource with clear illustrations of the 1960s and 1980s goequipments and uniform.

Both are illustrated by Ron Volstad. It finally explained to me what the mess of stuff in my field gear was from a model builder uniform geek point of view.
