This picture was given to me by a 24th ID tanker friend a couple of years ago, of unloading of his M1A1...I do not know of the authenticity of that statement (I was Infantry and had a M2A1) but I cannot see any disks on the blowout panels.
This is an older non-heavy M1A1. Two of the distinguishing features is the older style track (look at the spare blocks hanging on the grunt rails and the external APU. Heavies couldn't mount those for some reason. When I got back to the states and became BMO, the battalion I was assigned to had just gotten heavies and had a battalion's worth of the APUs that were removed from their straight M1A1s and we couldn't mount them on the heavies and had to get rid of them. Pain in the butt turning in gear like this.
