Where can I find the instructions for the decal call out for this?

I'd like to see the information about the vehicle markings.

Thanks,
Dustin

Hello Dustin,

see Hobby Search, there you will find Sprue Shots and pictures of the instructions as well as the two color charts of the included marking variants.

The decal sheet looks like it has more markings than what the instructions show?

Anthony, I don't have it yet, but I'll be buying it Tomorrow. That's the one I want too. I want to build it and give it to my Father for Christmas. He served in Desert Storm so I think he will like it.

So, that's why I was inquiring about the decal options, and possibly some of their history, if anybody happens to know.

Dustin,
the decal options for Army tanks are for 1-37 Armor 1st Armored Division or D Company 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment. the decaling sheet had the two offerings mixed up. There are no bumper numbers for those options, only the tactical markings...

The kicker is that both of those units did not use that type of M1A1 in ODS... Other units did though. So, if you are building this for your dad, what unit do you want to mark it as?? Of the pics that you posted previously, one was of a 24ID tank (the one with the "V" on the turret).

Once the marking decision is make, then we can go on to the unit histories...

John,

Thank you for that info.

Here is what I gathered from my Dad today.

He went to ODS with 212 FA bde. He said they were then attached to the 18th Airborne Corps. He also said that the 24th ID was with them.

Easy can do...

A 24ID tank from either 3-69 Armor, 1-64 Armor or 4-64 Armor.

Great, thank you John.

Now, do I just make the kit decals fit my needs, or?

Hey, Dustin!

You can also try ARCHER Dry Transfer sets- You can find them on ebay, for decent money. ARCHER just might have exactly what you're looking for...

Just checked ebay for you- You can try to make the appropriate markings for your Dad's Tank with these two ARCHER sets:

AR35001B- Generic Black US/Allied Bumper Codes

AR35195B- Generic US/Allied Numbers and Chevrons

I really like the ARCHER Dry Transfers- NO clear decal film to deal with. It's still best to apply these transfers over a clear gloss coat, and finish with a clear flat coat. I like to stick with like manufacturers for these coats, i.e, TESTORS with TESTORS, TAMIYA with TAMIYA, etc...

GOOD LUCK!

Thank you Dennis!

I may just have to make those work.

I blew up the picture of the chevrons, it looks like something is inside of the bottom chevron. A 1, maybe a 4?

Hard to tell with the picture he took from a disposable camera, in the desert in 91. Lol

Archer is certainly an option, as is sifting through the Echelon sets as you could make some of OIF decal sets work to your advantage by cobbling together the 24ID part as the battalions were the same in 1991 as they were in 2003...

Personally, I would do a combination of kit decals for the echelons and the computer with a printer for the unit markings and such. Get the clear ink jet paper at HL, print your designs then overcoat them with Dullcoat to seal. apply over gloss coat or Future. Easy to do.

The chevrons on the top of this Tamiya decal sheet is what you need for ODS 24th ID tracks. The direction of the chevron indicated which company and the dots represented which platoon.

This article I wrote will also help explaining all the markings. I explain one of the companies from 2-69AR which would be the same fro 3-69AR.

Kinda looks like a "4" to me... Not 100% sure, though...

It could be a number 4. I believe it was 1AD that used the number in the chevron. The number 4 inside the chevron was used.

This is from 2-70 AR, 1AD.

Other 1AD tanks.

3AD had a chevron w/a number in it on a black panel.

B Co, 4-8 Cav, 3AD

2-67 AR, 3AD.

** Of note, the second, thicker chevron further back on the sides, facing up was the Coalition Chevron that was applied to all vehicles in the Coalition to ID them from Iraqi vehicles. This chevron always faced up, no matter where it was applied.

Thank you all very much. This really helps me understand things better.

I wish I had some clearer pictures of the 24th ID tanks.

Epi, what is the part number on that decal sheet?

I found this pic that shows a 1-64 AR, 24 ID tank being uploaded with ammo. If you look on the skirt, it looks like a chevron w/a small 4 in it.

Caption -
"U.S. Army Pfc. Edward Bessette hands a 105mm round up to Spec. Scott Arnold as soldiers of 1st Battalion, 64th Armor, 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized) load ammunition aboard their M-1 Abrams tanks prior to deployment to Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Shield."

While we are on the subject of the 24 ID during Desert Storm, I came across an interesting pic. The interesting part to me is the uniform of the Soldier on the right. I had always been told the 3-color DCU was not issued until after ODS. Apparently some were there. The pic is IDed as ODS. Also interesting in the "V" on the helmets for Victory Division, 24 ID motto.

Thoughts??

Thank you Gino!

As for the uniforms, my Dad had both sets. We got on this topic awhile back and he said that he also wore that style, along with the chocolate chip and the woodland camo while he was over there. I asked him the same question.

My unit (1st ID) didn't get our chocolate chip cookie uniforms until three days before we left Al Jubail naval base (North Port) to head back to Germany.

Some 24th ID Tanks during Desert Storm...

My build of C-66 Charlie Co. 1-64 Armor during the ground war. Charlie Tank was attached to Task Force 3-15 Inf. along with Alpha Tank, Delta Co. 3-15Inf. and Charlie Co. 3-15 Inf. (my unit). The decals are dry transfers by Verlinden. The background pic is of Jalibah airfield taken from my Bradley during Task Force 3-15 assault on 2-27-91.

Rear Echelon got the 3 tone cammies as well as the HSLD Desert Boots. Us line dogs didnt get crap except leftovers...I made do with jungle boots and 2 sets of DCU's for 10 months...we got one new set of DCU's and a pair of the Desert boots when we came home in late March '91. It was Division policy that all helmets have the "V" for "victory Division" on them, as well as "V's" on all vehicles. Living large in the Desert...
