Has anyone used panzer putty or mig masking putty ! what if,any, are the advantages over silly putty ?

Never used silly putty but found that panzer putty is excellent for masking whilst spraying. It retains its shape and position as well as being 100% reusable. It cuts well with a blade but does take an age to flatten out when first removed from the tin

There is a cheaper product than Panzer Putty or the other hobby masking putties now being sold. It is called Theraputty and comes in different consistencies. I would suggest buying the Firm or Extra-Firm type. Available from Amazon.com or suppliers of physical therapy products.

Panzer Putty is fine on flat surfaces, but do not let it get into deep holes or around any pieces. It is then impossible to remove as it strongly adheres to itself. For example I tried to use it to mask the running gear of my FT-17 . . . . huge mistake. There remains much black putty behind the mud. Although Silly Putty also sticks to itself, it is much more easily removed.

What does / can it do that silly putty won't ?

I was motivated to try it after succumbing to all the hype. But the black colour is cool! I'm "sticking" to tape, Silly Putty and blue tac.

Ah -- so you don't think it's worth it ?

I've not found myself needing a replacement .

Keith . . . no, I wouldn't bother with it. But "it's a poor workman who blames his tools" so maybe I just haven't bothered to learn of its advantages.

I have found that silly putty leaves an "oily" residue that keeps paint from sticking like it should.

I use Faber Castell Tack it, the green one with good results.
Also I try the Uhu white one, but I don't like it.

Later I try Mig's one, I found it very usefull, I mask the windshield of my Tilly, and also the aft mudguards to paint them red.
Also I use it to mask metal letters to avoid paint goes thru, when I do a poster "Danger Uxb".

You can do cat hair width or huge masks. Something that I read around was to wait 30 minutes or more to conform better to the surface. I try it, I made a ball and after 30 minutes the ball disapears and you have a "pile".

I've been using silly putty for years and never had a problem with it. I've transferred mine to a different container from the original that's air tight. At .99 cents from my local drug store, I find it beats all the other masking puttys, I can buy it in bulk, throw it away when I want and buy more. I reuse it even with paint all over it. Is it possible the oily residue you describe is something it picked up during use?

Seems Russ's suggestion that it had picked up something oily in use might be accurate .
I don't remember it leaving a residue - but it's been a long while since I've handled it .

I bought Panzer Putty without thinking about silly putty. I'm not unhappy with PP. it has it's uses and it's faults.

You can stretch it slowly into any shape. You can stretch it quick enough that a piece breaks off. You can stretch it hair fine. You can slice it for nice straight lines. It lifts off easily with piece of it in your hand to lift it with.

However, if you leave it on too long, it will eventually work it's way down...even into
carpet. So don't leave it overnight.

I'm glad I tried it, though I won't swear that it's better than anything but tape or blue tack

yeah I havent been hearing much to persuade me into buying it !

I have the Mig putty, which I understand is just PP released under Mig's label. It is great for getting all kinds of shapes, but like Marcos I found it does leave behind some kind of residue. The residue tends to shed Future, which means multiple coats to get coverage, but a coat of matt varnish over the top of everything seems to make it disappear for the most part.

I use Silly Putty but i was attracted many time from PP or Mig "copy" but that stuff is definitely not cheap and i ask my self so many time "what is the real difference?"....because looks to have the exactly the same property and i bet have the same ingredients.

It would be nice if someone who has the PP make some test to see the difference with Silly Putty or Theraputty.

Wow-- this sure stirred up a lot of opinions-- as I mentioned before, I'll stick with Silly Putty because it costs less, is about the same thing, and I can by lots of it for the price of the other stuff--by the way, the longer you use the pink stuff, it'll turn a medium to dark gray or "sludge brown" color as it absorbs paint. Even with the absorption of paint, I've never had a problem with it leaving stains or messing up my work. Keep it long enough and it will probably go black-- just like the other stuff!

I was searching to buy some Theraputty and i find the Black one is the x-firm 6.60$Au for 85g/3oz we say "to think evil gets sin but usually you are right",i have the feeling some body make a lot of $$ out of these "special putty" for camo...
