Great idea. I just checked out the page. Not sure if I'm going to get the eyes, but I may jump on the C2A COD.

I finally got back down where I can work on the kit again.
I got the body mostly done, and the turret is coming along.
It won't be long before I'm going to have to make the decision on how to paint it.

Once again, art mimics life. Well done.

Your LAV is coming along nicely. Most of the LAR battalions had their vehicles painted in 3 color NATO, with the exception of 3rd LAR whose vehicles were painted sand; 1st, 2nd, and 4th LAR you're pretty much stuck with 3 color.

Robert, thanks for the kind words.
John, I was all set up to do the Sand color, but I think I'm going with the 3 color and a heavy dose of desert weathering.

After catching up on all the yard work I was able to get back at the LAV for a few hours.
I was thinking of putting a few packs and things on the side.
I'm getting close to paint, and I know there weren't many LAVs painted Desert Yellow, but I think that's where I'm going with this. Any suggestions or comments would be very helpful right now.
Also does anyone have a good picture of the packs I'm going to use, I'm having trouble finding a good picture to base them on.
Thanks.

Hi, nice job you are doing. I made one LAV two years ago and painted it olive drab. You can paint it in woodland pattern too.
Regards.

Mark,
The ALICE Packs were a rarity in Iraq, some guys in my company in '03 had them (4th LAR was a reserve unit used to round out the 3 AD LAR Bns.); the good news is you can still go tri-color camo, and use the same figures and the ALICE Packs and still be spot on, I have pics to back you up in my gallery on here. We had most of our gear outside, except sensitive items and ammo, home was a 7.62 ammo can in front of your seat (nobody went into another guys can without asking permission).

I was finally able to get down the basement today and work on the LAV.
The person I work with told me to paint it desert camo.
So here's where it is now.
Not sure why the colors are showing so washed out, but it looks MUCH better in person.

So this will be the desert yellow, not the 3 color NATO? Mark, this looks like a cool build regardless, and nice interaction w/ the locals.

My friend Eric wanted it to be Desert Yellow and not the 3 color green, so since this build was his idea I went for what he wanted.
Today I added a few packs and dusted them with a little sand color pastels to see how they'll look.
Then after my shower tonight I gave it all a clear coat, and all the dust on the packs is gone.
I am happy with how the camera got the color right this time.
Not sure how much I'm going to get done until after Thanksgiving, I'm working a tone of hours.

Today I did a pin wash on the LAV.
After that took my brown, gold, and white pastels and ground them up for my desert dust. Then I dusted the tires. I'm extremely happy with the way they came out.

A quick update.
I got the dull coat put on, and added straps to the packs and cans.
I'll let this dry for a day then I'll work on the pastels.
Thanks for looking.

Today I was able to finish up the LAV. I gave the whole thing a pastel coat, and added the wheels and antennas. Then I decided to see if I still liked my mock up idea, so I placed everything down on the base. I'm very happy with how it all is coming together.
Now I just need to find a good picture to use as a background.

OK, so this is as far as I'm going to go with this until I can find a suitable frame for my base.
I finished weathering the LAV, and I added the rope and bag on the front. I went around the LAV with some black pastels. Next I shaved some more pastels to make desert sand, and did a heavy handed weathering over the whole thing. Since this is my first attempt at armor I'm extremely happy with how it came out. I might be bitten by the armor bug. This was a lot of fun to build and even more fun to weather.
I just couldn't stand how my dog looked, so I repainted her and also took some time to make the puppy and get him painted.
Then I spent a long time arranging and rearranging everything until it looked (to me) natural. I still have to put the mikes on the LAV operators.
So this (I think) is going to be my final layout.
Thanks for looking.

Mark,
This came out great, especially for your first time!
One suggestion: angle the vehicle slightly in relation to the rear of the base.
Usually dioramas stay away from anything (bldgs, roads, vehicles, etc) too parallel to the edges of the base...IMHO.
Regards
Dave

Dave
Thanks for the reply.
I'm nowhere near done with this, but I plan on putting the LAV at about a 20 degree angle to the background, I just set everything up on the cork just to see how the people look along side the LAV.
My base is going to be made out of plaster and not cork with some scrub brush and stones. The background is going to be a photo that my friend has, a short foam board stone fence to give some separation between the photo and the model, then the LAV, then the people.
I was just excited about finishing the LAV, and had to see what it looked like.
Here's my original idea (sorry about the primitive Paint)
I'm most likely going to put this on hold until after the Holidays, then go gang busters on this and my Gama Goat dio that I've been chomping at the bit to start.
Thanks for the reply.

Well I think I'm calling this one done.
I used a sponge roller and wall plaster to make the sand texture. I airbrushed that for color, and was happy with the effect.
The scrub brush is made from gluing pieces of ornamental grass tassels together. Then lastly I gave the base a pastel dusting.
I'm VERY happy with how everything came out. It doesn't have a background because it's going on display at the Veterans center and the shelf has a mirrored back.

Your diorama turned out really nice. I was happy to see that there is a guy pulling security and the rucksacks hanging from their straps. It was also nice to see a diorama of our guys doing good things for the civilians. Things like this happened more than fighting did the times I wad there.
I think it will be well received and appreciated when you display it at the Veterans' center.
I hope to see more of your work in the future.
Cheers,
James

Thanks for the kind response. Two years or so ago The Major and I talked about doing something for the display case, and when I found the Master Box set I knew this was what I wanted to do.
There is so much more to our military than shoot em up.
It came out exactly as I planned.
I'm not nearly as good as most people on here, but I am very happy with how it came out.

Really nice work.
I also have done the Master Box thing on many occasions.
Like and buy and then work a dio around them.
