I'd like to build a dunkelgrau Tiger using the most accurate kit I can get for around $40. I think the Grey Tigers look the most... menacing. I'm thinking the Academy 13264 Tiger 1 Early Version will work.
What do you guys think?

I just sold one of those world of tanks Tiger 1 kits. Nothing wrong with them at all. Not a lot of surface texture (none, really) to the plastic, so it's rather "plain" but a big cat in every way. Lots of parts, clean casting, and it'll certainly do.
I too like the early grey stuff. Looks..."mean" and weathers beautifully.

The "world of tanks" kits are by Italeri, and as far as accuracy is concerned, there are many, many things wrong with them. More than I care to list.
Academy's 13264 is better, but it has a few things that look slightly wrong in shape. More important for you, it doesn't represent any Tigers that were painted grey.
For a grey Tiger, you're limited to Dragon's 6600 or its earlier incarnation 6252. Also there's Rye Field's 5003. It's valid to paint that grey but the instructions don't say so and the appropriate decals are not provided.

I'd add Tamiya's "Tiger I Early Production
reference 35216" maybe possible to find one cheap if you shop around.

I'd like to note* I don't know much about the Tiger--but I am studying it. Wasn't aware of the inaccuracies with the Italeri kit and didn't mean to recommend it to confuse the subject.

$40 ain't going to get you much not in 35th scale.
Now if your not bothered about accuracy or adding metal barrel and engine grills and such then go with the Tamiya kit and build it out the box.
But if it's accuracy you want then $40 is not going to cut it.
Have you thought of the Tamiya 1/48 kit they are about 30 odd dollars.

If he watches dragonusaonline.com like a hawk he could snag one for half retail, but it might take a while until it happens.

David, sir, please explain this to me.
How is it you know more about German armor than Academy? They're an entire company whose business is... making models! On model-making.eu they show the instructions for the Academy model and one of the paint schemes is grey!
I can understand old kits from the 70's and 80's being inaccurate, but now there's this little thing called the"internet". I don't think there's a kid today that would be caught dead doing something as nerdy as building a model. So who are these companies' customers? Anal old guys waiting to rivet count their kits into the ground, that's who! So if they know their customers are paying attention, why put out kits that can be picked apart by someone with a coffee table book and an internet connection?!?!?
As to the Dragon kits, more than $60 and you give me rubber band tracks! RUBBER BAND TRACKS!!! What happened to magic tracks? Forget it. No dice. I'd rather get a Tamiya kit, add indi-links and actually have fun building a good looking model. Maybe not super accurate, or a thousand+ pieces but fun.
Off to my dude cave to finish my 1974 vintage Tamiya M3 Stuart, incorrect tracks and all!
Rant over.

David, is it because Tiger 332 should be finished in color/s for the N. Africa campaign? If so, what would be the appropriate color/s?

Adam,
David is pretty much THE go to guy on Tiger 1 information. He has advised on tons of Dragon Tiger 1 kits. Hell, he even has a website dedicated to accuracy of Tigers. So yeah.. I'd say he knows a thing or two.
Plus.. You came here asking about an accurate kit.

I cannot vauch for its accuracy, but this kit might fit the bill. While its listed at 10 dollars over your price range, you might be able to shop around and find it for less.

Umm...
To those of you thinking I'm being rude or insulting to David, I assure you that was NOT my intention. Quite the opposite really. Perhaps I should clarify.
My point is, why is it one guy (David) knows more about the German Tiger than an entire company? I'm sure David's knowledge comes from a genuine interest and he probably isn't even motivated by profit. Academy and other companies actually are motivated by profit and have an obligation to make an honest product. With all the resources model companies have they should be able to do this. Academy saying their kit can appropriately be painted grey, when it can't, isn't cool!
I don't understand why they keep doing this when they know knowledgeable people, like David, are going to call them on it. A perfect example was that Dragon Black Label American T54 heavy tank kit. The turret in the kit didn't eve match the box art! You don't need a book full of tank pictures to know something is wrong there!
In closing:
I have no beef with David and I appreciate and value his input.
I do have a beef with model companies making claims about their kits that aren't true. They shouldn't tell me their kit can be made into an early Tiger when, well... it can't be.
My apologies to anyone I offended.
Jeez you guys can be sensitive!

So, how many options would there be for said grey versions of this kit, decals that are available, and good color references for such a build? Hope I didn't hijack the thread, and thanks. Also there's Rye Field's 5003. It's valid to paint that grey but the instructions don't say so and the appropriate decals are not provided.

You are right. Companies are profit driven. We are accuracy driven. In every single kit there are flaws, because it takes lots of time to study subject, to make it right. And it is needles to say, that it does cost money.
Therefore, anyone who starts doing research on kit he is building, inevitably will find faults, simplifications and errors manufacturer did.
It is similar with aircraft models. You know, it looks nice when you pose it standing on ground with control surfaces pointed random way? Anyone with minimal knowledge knows, that control surfaces are always locked on the ground, therefore no random orientation....
I would suggest asking what is wrong with academy kit, and why it cannot be gray, instead of going personal "Mr. Knowsitall"

I don't claim to know more about "German armour" than they. I'm not sure why you scoped my knowledge as "German armour" instead of, say, "Entire History of the World".
I do claim to know more about the Tiger 1 than Academy have embedded into this model. Or, indeed, any of their Tiger models.

Yes, it's Tiger 123 of s.Pz.Abt.502 at Leningrad 1942. Academy are correct in saying that "123" was painted grey. But that Tiger was one of the first ones ever built and it had many details different to what's in this kit. For example, it had no side skirts.

You'd have to ask them. Perhaps they have chosen the optimal balance of profit versus research costs. Perhaps they did their best and can do no better. I can't speak for them.

Well of course the answer lies in the famous-"If you can get 80% done with 20% effort, don't waste the other 80% of effort to get the last 20% done!"-attitude that is followed of course by profit oriented companies. And I can assure you: Most people wouldn't even get the inaccuracies or even bother about them. It's us crazy people in forums like this giving the impression everyone's like us... well, they're not!
And overall we would have to admit that kits got better and better over the years. Look at all those new companies poping up and bringing us good and mostly accurate stuff like crazy. Or the improvements: Thinking of Trumpeters early T-55 kits I am hit by a shiver of disgust, now look at their recent kits...

s it because Tiger 332 should be finished in color/s for the N. Africa campaign? If so, what would be the appropriate color/s?
That's not an easy question to answer. We have many photos of Tigers in s.Pz.Abt.503 but they are rarely fresh new ones. The battalion seemed to be very fond of repainting their Tigers and we don't know what colours they used.
They were sent some grey Tigers that ended up in their 3rd company but 332 was not one of them. All other Tigers sent to the 503 should, in theory, be painted in a Tropen scheme because the unit operated so far to the south.
There is a photo of 332 with a distinct camouflage pattern on it but the light colour does not seem light enough to be RAL 8020. Personally I think they used mud or paint over the first Tropen scheme, which would show up as medium dark on a B/W photo.
