I looked but I can't locate it.
There was a diorama with a Soviet truck converted to a civilian truck. It was a cab over, and the cab was tilted forward. I was planning on something similar and did not save a link to it. Can someone point me to it?

If it was in 1/35th scale then the only cab-over soviet truck that I am aware of is the KaMAZ 4310

Robin, thank you, however the GAZ 66 4x4 is also a cab over, and there are several version by Trumpeter. I'll probably get that ICM kit in the future. If only I could find the diorama.

Maybe, but I think the truck was more weathered and beat up. It was a Middle East diorama if I remember correctly.

Couldn't find a blushing smiley so I have to type it instead.
I have even got a few of those GAZ-66's in my stash
Trumpeters and some older east European ones ....
I'll just go and hide somewhere until the shame goes away

Thanks for your help. The older I get, the more senior moments I have. I over looked the diorama several times.

If so, It's not a Soviet truck at all, maybe a Chinese copy of an old Soviet truck. It is Trumpeter's Chinese Tank Transporter cab and frame with the bed from Trumpeter's US 5 ton M1083 FMTV added to it.

Hi Randall,
Gino is absolutely right on both counts. For an older kit, the tractor is a good build - it goes together nicely and as you saw on the build, with some time and use of scraps, wires, lead foil, some metal rods, and some remnant PE, it can be turned into a pretty nice project. The tires are stock, and really nice - the rare combination of good looks and can be weathered pretty easily - I used acrylics. The bed was a remnant from another project where I converted the truck to a tractor with a 5th wheel. I'm glad you like the build - I really didn't expect much and was pleasantly surprised with the results.
Looking forward to seeing your build!
Cheers
Nick

Nick,
Thanks for the information. I thought the truck was Soviet because I only had a vague memory of it. I have very few spares in my modern truck parts box, to be honest, none! I have a couple models coming, and plan on getting over to the local shop. He has one of the SAM trucks that I was thinking the tractor would make a good old, used civilian truck with a flat bed.
Surfing the net shows large numbers of European and Asian civilian trucks in Syria and Iraq. Some of the 1/32 scale trucks would work, but I like the old worn out look of the ex-military.
I'm still contemplating that tank transporter. Are the trailer wheels the same as on the truck?

Hi Randall -
As i recall, the trailer has equally nice, but smaller diameter tires.
Before you go and spend too much time and money on that old kit, take a look at Hobby Link Japan's website, and look for 1/32 passenger car kits. I know it sounds wrong, but, once you get into the right area, you'll also see a number of truck kits - in fact, one called the:
1/32 Fuso T951 Late Flat Body from Aoshima looks pretty nice and $62 USD....
It's worth looking around this site - they have a lot of choices and some are very inexpensive - and easy enough to either convert to left hand drive, or just not worry about it.
OK - good luck - looking forward to seeing your build -
NIck

Nick,
I've done a search for 1/32 scale trucks and had a look at those Aoshima kits. Many are sold out. I think that some of the newer versions are seen in pictures of the food convoys in Syria. It can be hard to tell.
I found a lot of trucks on E-bay, but most cost too much. I did buy a Canter truck that I plan on putting a ZU-23-2 on.
Thanks,
Randy

Nick
Greetings, It looks like I am back in business, computer wise as of yesterday.
Can you (or anyone else, for that matter) recommend any current 1/32 or 1/35th truck kits that would yield a good looking commercial fifth wheel for a semi tractor conversion?
I have tried the one from Custom Factory and also I have hopes of interesting Mike G. in offering a digitally printed one some day.

I used one from a 1/32 Revell Mack R truck for my M932 5th wheel. I think it looks pretty good.
