Okay dudes what color for all these Vietnam vehicles?
And for the troops?
Is it FX -64 for the OD green?
And the camo helmet covers are?
Getting close to painting one in it's top coat.
Thanks
Jeff

The exact color is nearly impossible to discern. Even color photographs can be a different shade than the actual vehicle. Helmet covers are another matter, but I have no information concerning that.

Pick a green and roll with it. Once you begin to weather it the color will change and it won't much matter. Exposed to the elements, sun, rain, ground in dirt, etc. colors change, fade, and look different depending on the lighting, time of day etc.
Same with the cloth helmet color. Dyes fade, get sun bleached, sweat soaked, and even sometimes washed. All effect the color and brightness.
Bottom line, find a color that you think is close and that you are satisfied with and it will probably look right in the end.

XF-74 JGSDF OD is closest to what I remember. As stated, it's really a toss up, weathering will change the base color.

This is what a helmet cover looks like relatively new.
This is after a bit.
They faded to an almost uniform shade of "Pea Green" just before rotting away.
Pics from the interweb for discussion only.

One I had looked just like the bottom one, and maybe worse.
XF-74 JGSDF OD
Would have to know it but only color I do not have.
Thanks all.

Most later equipment and ongoing into the 80's was Forest Green FS 30479.
Prior to that, it was an OD (of varying shades) just like in Garrison vehicles but were repainted with FLAT OD over the factory applied semi-gloss... that's where the variation comes from.
USMC used a greener OD until the factories started manufacturing everything in the updated flat forest green (30479).

Yeah, XF-74 is just a tad more green than Tamiya's regular OD. Looks good to these tired old eyes.

My dyslexic fingers got the best of me. Thanks!
That reminds me of the agnostic insomniac that laid awake all night wondering if there was a Dog.

A comparison of paints, does this color look right?
XF -74 to the left OD green to the right, looks a tad gray to me.
Thanks

Jeff,
You really can't go by those Tamiya cap lids-- they are only an approximation. I suggest you paint a spot on a white background to check the difference. However, I'd go with the OD color for Vehicles, the Olive Drab is more of a uniform color when it comes to using these Tamiya paints-- it looks quite like the woolen uniform colors we were issued for cold weather overshirts, and wool blankets, which seemed to have more of an "olive" color.

Thanks I might just do that Russ, after all this stuff for this outdated kit that has to be bought or made.
I wish that Bronco , Meng , AFV Club , would come out with a ready to go kit, well at least close to go.
I guess Nam stuff never made it big, as WW II did ,with 5 million Panzer III's
