Hello everyone

Just completed my latest project - set in East Prussia during the early 1945, it portrays the flight of refugees from Eastern Europe from the Russian advance. As usual spent a bit at time at the beginning doing some research of the period, the horrors the civilians fled from, the 'Stalingrad Minatures' website have some excellent reference photos next to their figure images which are a great source.

Made a wooden base to include a plaque which will give a bit of history & background story in the form of text & images. Saw something similar on someones work elsewhere & thought it looked a nice idea. The kit here is Miniarts 'Russian Street #36026. The scene has 24 figures in total from Stalingrad, Verlinden, MK35, Dragon & Masterbox, along with afew obligatory Hornet heads, with a mix of German troops & civilians.

Hi Simon, I have the Mini-Art building in my stash. What is your opinion of the kit?

Thanks guys for your feedback, appreciate that...
Ken - The miniart building was fairly straightforward to put together, apart from the usual windows & doors, just 8-9 pieces in total for the walls. The usual odd hole around the edges where the blade didn't want to go, but after filling, it was all good. Did have a few problems getting the finished building to 'sit' in the groove that comes with the street part, some of the moulded debris spills out into the groove & needs cutting out to allow the building to sit flush where it's supposed to be aligned. Nothing too dramatic & along with the street & fence (if you have the kit #36026) it was nice. Only thing I might suggest is to change the first floor segment that comes with the kit, & make your own instead. Looked around the net at other examples first, & most people seemed to do a better job in creating their own flooring with balsa etc... The kit part to me is too squared off & unrealistic for a damaged building...?

Here's a few more progress photos, these are the early street pics & weathering of the buildings interior. Airbrushed the brick walls of the building in various tones of orangey-brown , trying to avoid the standard 'brick red' that I usually find myself doing.... Then picked out various random bricks in different tones of the original colour before the usual weathering & filters were added.

Made a couple of wallpapers on the computer for the interior whilst painting the others one colour, before hairspraying, then adding the top coat in a different colour to chip/flake it away...quite a satisfying task... Wanted the inside walls to look quite worn & weathered, so used a number of different products like AK's Slimey Grime & Wet Effects fluid as well as oil washes. Finally gave it all a dusting of AK's Pigment Rubble which is excellent for a dusty look. The room on the left will eventually have a soldier sleeping off the effects of the recently liberated alcohol his comrades are enjoying out in the street.
The car is a Simca from Tamiya, really small vehicle that was perfect in size to fit on here, didn't want anything too big obstructing anything... Spent a fair bit of time on this one, even the inside of the car, with all the personal items, boxes etc.. Unfortunately this would later all be mostly hidden by the canopy of the car's roof. Probably a few hours wasted....but at least I know it's there..

Wow Simon,

Looks excellent & you’ve done a great job on MiniArt’s Russian building. It’s best used as a façade as you’ve done & agree that while it’s a good kit overall – and it’s relatively substantial - it’s weak on interior damage. I used it a while ago (Ep 4 of the Citadel/Kursk dios - last post 4th Jan this year currently on p15 of this forum ) & needed to extend it out a lot at the back (for house-to-house fighting dio) using standard foam packaging plastered with ‘filla for additional walls & balsa for floors/rafters. Consequently it needed a lot of wreckage piled inside, given the roof & 1st floor must have burnt out/caved in, which was way more work than originally intended - not recommended!

Suggest window-glass shards in situ & on pavement? Looking forward to more pics.

Hey Tim & Scott, thanks for the feedback guys! Tim I like the pictures from your dio, very artistic. Can see what you mean about the extra work you needed doing at the rear...seemed a good idea at the time...? But it looks like the effort paid off!! The shards of glass are duly scattered...

Here's a couple more images from the last build I did, based upon the great exodus from Eastern Europe during early 1945. The figures in this set are from Verlinden & Stalingrad. Great detail & lovely to paint. The children are begging for food from the soldiers, whilst the rest of the refugee convoy queues for the checkpoint.

The crates of champagne & cognac are from Miniart - great little set for dioramas, think it was a total of 12 crates with enough bottles to fill them, plus labels for each bottle. A bit of weathering on the crates & they came out quite well. The baggage for the cart & civilians are from Stalingrad too, part of the kit 'Refugee boy with Possessions'. Will spread this around the model.

I love dioramas like this. Not the usual tanks-and-soldiers subject but a history-snapshot depicting the horrors of war, suffered by all sides.
Looks this is going to be museum quality !!!

Hey guys...., thank you for the feedback, appreciate that!

Tim - thanks as always, the date on the building was just one of those 'out of the blue' ideas, just gives it a more personal touch maybe?
Hans - 'museum quality'...I'll take that cheers mate
Tom - gotta love the Stalingrad figure sets, really nice to work with. Obviously they're individual cost push the price of the final model up, compared to roughly the same price for a set of 4-5 Miniart figures, but they are really nice....

Last set of pics to follow shortly...
Thanks
Simon.

Thank you Kurt....appreciate that, sometimes I find the historical part of it is of just as much artistic interest as the armor & vehicles etc... Cheers!

Final set of pics for this one, saw the idea with the front plaque on another dio sometime ago, & thought it helped with the mood & story of the scene. Was going to take the strip of plastic & the text/images on file to a professional printer to see if they'd make me a good looking plaque for me. But then had the thought of using transfer paper printed from the printer, waterproofed, then slid off using water. Very flimsy & delicate but the finished result worked! Nameplate from nameitplates.co.uk

The tree was the first one I've made from scratch using wire - reasonably happy with it, obviously a learning curve, needing slightly finer wire next time I think.
As mentioned before, figures a mix of Stalingrad, MK35, Verlinden, Masterbox & Dragon. Simca from Tamiya, Cart & Building/Street set from Miniart.

Thank you guys for that..... Was really pleased how it turned out, in the end, always room for improvement & time consuming (Nov - July), but definitely was a labour of love..... Interesting period in time, must've been terrifying for the civilian population.
Appreciate the feedback..!

Yes,this turned out very very well for sure ! The groundwork is excellent and the inter action with the figures you picked is spot on I think. Very nice.

Hi Jerry...., actually thought about your dio the other day after I'd posted these last few pics....& wondered why I'd not seen any recent updates & how things were progressing...?? Just had another look at your build, it's been a while....??

As I mentioned I was happy with the way this one ended up, and thanks for your kind words mate, but your 'Stalingrad' figs (like for like) are superb, thought mine were ok until I had another look at yours.....
Look forward to seeing yours develop further, thanks for the feedback, really appreciated..!
Cheers

Simon.
