Good question. It was used for...something. I don't think it actually saw service in the IDF. Nevertheless, the vehicle(s) apparently stayed in Israel as one of them is on display in Latrun (might be even the very same vehicle pictured here); there's another one dumped somewhere in the Hermon.

Looks like that vehicle is out of service. Always thought the ITV was a good piece of kit (at least in a defensive role). Dig it in and just the "hammerhead" site is visible.

Never really noticed what a low profile the Merkava's turret has. Must be real plus if you are fighting from a hull-down position.

They're still quiet common in rear-echelon ordnance, medical, logistic and command units, as well as in reserve infantry units. Mind you, the IDF still has thousands of them. The Merkava Mk.II based Ofek is a good candidate to replace (at least some of those) those ancient M113s.

Regular front-line infantry units use almost exclusively HAPCs these days: Achzarits, Nagmachons, Nakpadons, Namers, and in the (very) near future , Eitans too. Regular, as well as reserve combat engineers units use Pumas.

Perhaps the foam is used for stabilising the belly armor so that it does not shake and rattle while on the move.

That would be my guess too, although it doesn't seem to be a common practice.
