Must be a better way; recessed bolts

When I've done these in the past I drill a hole, fill it with recessed rod stock and then fit a sliced bolt on top. There has to be a better way than this to do these!

I would glue the bolt, onto the rod before inserting it into the hole.

Drill a recessed hole so you only put the bolt head in place. Place a piece of brass tube over the drill bit to act as a depth guage.

I use hexagon rod for my bolt heads. Countersink a hole and glue a short piece of rod in it. After it's dry, go in with a razor knife and cut the rod flush with the surrounding metal.
