Hello everyone ,
the two figures or let's say the servants of the Scorpion / Ballista are almost finished . I have to think about the lay out of the diorama . Anyways here are the two actors , on the left side the gunner and the loader on the right side .
Thanks for watching ,
Kurt

Very nicely done Kurt, more skin to get right than usual & you nailed it. They don’t need it, but I started wondering whether anyone’s attempted body-hair and how convincing it was/is? Painting it would be liable to just look like dirt/smudges but I can’t think of a super-fine material that would work either.

A fellow modeler named Andrew Argent painted some hairy arms and it was scary real looking. He posts on FB and also now works for a model products company as a side line.

Thanks Tim and Jerry for your replies .
* Tim , well to be honest i was thinking about the same issue , do they need some more body hair ? Like on their arms and legs ? Or was it common in ancient Roman time that men removed their body hair ? Anyways to get to to the point that Jerry mentioned , it must be extremely difficult to paint body hair on a figure . You could end up with a figure that looks more like a chimpanzee if you know what i mean .
Let's see what i can do , the left Roman has a beard by the way but you can't see it on the photo .
Thanks guys for the thoughts .

Hi everyone ,
okay , i've tried to paint hair on the arms and legs of one Roman Legionnaire . The guy has a beard and body hair , he looks older than the other one with the arrow in his hands . The paint i have used was watercolor + a fine brush and applied in very small strokes . it went really well to my surprise . I show you a picture .
His legs are also done by the way so he looks a lot older than the other one .
Any thoughts by this ?
Thanks ,
Kurt

Hi Kurt, not bad at all – from a normal distance it should look fine & varies the skin tone well – I’d temporarily forgotten this is big scale so it is more of a thing than at 1/35. The only idea I’ve had (which may well be useless) is applying the hair-tone with a very fine sponge – maybe 2 or 3 dilute washes to control it better & so you don’t get a hard edge? I’m not trying to make futile work for you, as you speculated before they may well have shaved their body hair off - we’re possibly both thinking of a Greek or Roman statue of an athlete scraping himself with a strigil, maybe it was the common fashion & body-hair thought of as barbarian?

Thanks Tim for the thoughts and sorry for my very late reply . Not convinced however about using washes i"m a little bit afraid that the outcome will look like the guy has tattoos on his arms and legs . Which is perfectly fine for me in normal live ,but in Roman time ?
In the mean time , a picture of the diorama . However it's not finished yet but it gives you a ''pretty good'' idea how the scene looks like .
Thanks for watching everyone .
Kurt
Ow before i forget , i have made the arrow a lot smaller .

Very very cool. Nice progress. I think the hair on his arms is about all you can expect in this scale.

Thanks Jerry , i agree with you unfortunately there's no aftermarket in this large scale , some different heads with facial expressions for example would be a very welcome item in my opinion . Maybe someday ....?

Smallish update of this project , if there are projectiles then there must be something to hold or contain them . The answer is yes of course , but what ? I've found the solution on the web , the Roman Legionnaires made baskets to put there arrows in , so i have made a basket in small scale . The materials that i used were a plastic cup ( cut out in half ) and some fine rope . After the scratch build it was painted with acrylics and dry brushed with pigments .
This is the result ,
I have two options , depicting an empty basket like the soldier holds the last arrow in his hands or i can fill it with arrows ? Don't know yet .
I am also thinking about to put a third figure to the scene which would be an ''Optio'' the second in charge of a Century ( the leader is a Centurion as you all know ) reason for that is because of the outfit which was for an Optio practically the same as a common Legionnaire except for the helmet . A Centurion wore a completely different outfit and armor .
Stay tuned
Thanks for watching .

To all , the diorama is near completion . But before showing the update i must say that i did a terrible job adding the decals on the shields , nevertheless here are the pictures of the work i did today.
Thanks for watching .

Thanks J , i already started to fill the basket too in the meantime took the diorama outside to take a few pictures in the afternoon . I was curious to notice how the colors would look in broad daylight .
a few adjustments are required concerning the gloss , after that it's finished .
Thanks for watching .
