Hi everyone ,
i am building a diorama currently in scale 1/16 . i had this idea to depict two or three Roman legionnaires preparing their catapult , actually a Scorpio which is a weapon to shoot arrows on targets mainly on enemy infantry attacks . Each centurio had one Scorpio that could fire two to three arrows per minute . The device was always posted on higher ground to have a better view on the battleground.
Okay , i had no problem to find figures ( Miniart ) on large scale but i had to build the Scorpion from scratch . So i did , from Balsa wood and scrap material . And here is the result after cutting and gluing the pieces together a little Scorpion was born .
It did shoot a toothpick from one side to the other side of the benche
but risking to overstretch the little thing i didn't continue . Please note that the Scorpion was not finished yet on the pictures above , so more on the next update . Thanks for watching .

Hi everyone ,
the last update for me this year .
I've made an arrow from a long stick or whatever the right name is . Show you the picture ,
The arrow itself , it looks like a steel point on the top actually it's painted with Tamiya metal grey and afterwards polished with metal polishing powder from Uschi von der Rosten
here's a close up ,
The arrow in the Scorpion , but not the correct way like it should be , it's more like the trigger has been released and the arrow shoots away .
Now the posing of the two soldiers who operate the device . One who's task it is to retract the trigger by turning the wheel on the side and the other loads the Weapon . Let's say that they both aim and shoot

Hi Kurt, and happy new year!
Nice as always to see your work - interesting subject too. Regarding the paint, I've had good results with Vallejo model air metallics - using a brush. Some patience and blending the colors with light washes can turn out pretty well. The thin washes won't result in brush marks and can be very shiny. I'm usually trying to "tone down" the shine - so, this might be fine for this project!

in the case you're still to find good metalic paints i would highly recommend the Scale75 metal set, the bests acrylic paints i've ever seen !

Hi Nick ,
as always it's a joy for me to read your words of encouragement and you are always to the point . I'll keep your suggestion in mind for sure there is another way it's a combination of using paintbrush and airbrush it should be the fastest way but a lot more difficult . I think if it were me I would have broken it once I found out it "worked"....
I've often thought of trying something similar, nice to see someone doing such a neat job on it.
The arrows in particular look pretty nasty (in a "good" way)

well to tell you the truth, i almost broke it and i had to fix it too . But ssstttt..... that's strictly between you and me .
The build is very simple , you can find drawings on the internet or Tutorials on You Tube were people are building the same device for real , i mean real size .
I don't know if i'm gonna keep the large size of arrows maybe it's better to make them smaller .

Okay , i've started to paint one figure especially the armor plates and helmet . The rest is painted in base color . The figure is not finished .
To paint the armor i took several colors of acrylic paint from Tamiya . Mixture of flat white , medium and sky grey , metallic grey and aluminium . So the outcome was a light greyish tone color , when dry i polished it with polishing metal powder from Uschi Van Der Rosten to create the shiny look and this is the result for now , the line sideways in the tunic is not a seem or gap .

Hi everyone ,
i'm back with a smallish update about the paintwork on the Legionnaire that i have done so far and yes his tunic underneath the armor plate is way to glossy . I'm gonna change that for sure so don't panic and yell at me '' HEY THE SURFACE OF THAT FIGURE IS TO SHINY ''
. Its just a test to see how the color tone must be and to be honest it looks a bit to much Ferrari red i have to tone down the color a bit .
The paintwork on his armor and helmet however is near completion , i think a pinwash of metallic grey mixt with black on the rivets will finish it ?
About the flesh color of the skin . Hmmm.... don't know i have used the Flesh paint set of Andrea Color but still missing depth on the arms and legs . Anyway here are the pictures of the Legionnaire ,

* Tim , yes in fact it's between a scorpion and ballista , both use the same technique . The scorpion was used as a precision weapon and a ballista to break the defence walls . You can compare them respectively like a machinegun and mortar .

I remember seeing a photo in a Roman archaeology book years ago of one of these bolts embedded in the spine of an unfortunate victim…entering from the front.
I know that too , if i'm right it was a discovery in Great Britain of the remains of a Celtic warrior . It is believed that the poor guy was killed by a scorpions dart .
