Joe Bakanovic, owner of Tiger Model Designs, recently sent out a call for volunteers willing to take on a build incorporating Tiger Model Designs resin products. Joe stated that he would supply the kits and all the resin bits. Without a blink I tossed my hat into the ring. A short while later a box arrived on my door step; inside was Tamiya 35355 Matilda Mk. III/IV Red Army, and a box FULL of resin parts. My excitement briefly turned to panic....as I started unpacking the resin I had a fleeting moment of "what have I gotten myself into".....I will be building in the evenings, my hope is that you enjoy following along as I super detail this Matilda with TMD resin

Here is the box of resin...everything that is made for the Matilda!

Something that I am very impressed with is the way TMD has done the suspension covers and track skids (not sure if that is the right term). TMD has made the mounting brackets in one piece and the cover is clearly marked for correct placement. The kit breaks the bracket into two parts, hopefully the photos I have attached clearly show what I mean. The skids themselves are very thin and easily separated from the casting block with care.

Removing from the casting block

Comparison of the Tamiya skids, the Tamiya brackets are in two parts; whereas, the TMD is a one piece bracket.

Tamiya skid vs. TMD - the TMD is about one half the thickness

TMD Skids are clearly marked for correct placement

Typically I resort to photo etch for these, not this time!

I was measuring some parts for correct placement; I thought that people may find these interesting. My Uncle got these out of a German tank during the war, he served with the Canadian military. Starting in Italy his war ended for in Holland shortly after the liberation. These are my go to calipers for everything.

Yes the tmd stuff does that improve on the kit. It s great stuff. Different nose castings, Australian bits, lend lease and desert versions. I have been a happy customer for a long time.

Sorry, but none of your pics are visible to me. It's just the dreaded Photobucket message. I suspect others will have the same problem.

Nice build you have going on there mate.
Can't wait to see this with paint.
More patience then I with all that resin.
And I thought TMD shut down?
Maybe I am thinking of something else as I know I bought a bunch of stuff say 10 years back from Tiger Models.

Cheers

The company has gone through several changes. I sold it to my brother about 8-10 years ago now?? Anyway, got it back after 2 years, changed the name to NewTMD, then chose to just shorten it to TMD (Tiger Model Designs). Most of this mess was driven by legal and tax problems.

Anyway, still in business under TMD, www.tigermodeldesigns.com.

Cheers,

Joe :-)

Really strange. I see all pictures. May be the plugin for Firefox I installed some times ago to see PB pictures?

I was having issues with the pics posting and then disappearing; the fix was easy, I switched hosting sites....all seems to be going good with Imgur.

Here are some shots of my progress:

The ammo boxes are beautiful, the fit of the lid is perfect. It really amazes me how fine resin parts can be cast.

Kit part vs. TMD part

This weeks progress:

I have been stalling on the tracks; however, I am committing myself to getting them done by the end of the week!

This bracket still needs a bit of clean up, but I want to point out that the bracket is marked for correct placement of another part of the bracket. Also, if you look close the surface is texturized....wonderful attention to detail!

This past week has been dedicated to getting the tracks done. No rubber band style tracks to fall back on here! However, having said that Tamiya has done a great job with these tracks. Each link is made up of two parts, and the links easily snap together. Each side is 69 links. I have included some close up shots of the front stowage bins, the surface textures are nicely done and there is a choice of having casting numbers. I have opted to use the lids that have the casting numbers. Moving back to the exhaust, I am using the staggered set, they are easily mounted with the exhaust pipes mating with the kit parts quite nicely. I will also be adding the extra fuel tank.

Right and left side front stowage bins - the surface textures and casting numbers really look great

A few of the items on the turret:

TRACKS ARE DONE!!! They lay nicely along with resin skids:

Exhaust and staggered mufflers:

These will remain off until I paint.

Just a quick side by side of the Tamiya kit brackets vs. TMD bracket. The brackets are for the rear fuel tank.

Great start Greg!

I will be following this as I have a big bunch of TMD Matilda updates and conversions that need to be used up and this is inspiring to watch.

Now we just need Joe to release those cast track guards to complete the Aussie theme :-)

Thanks for the heads up Joe.
Still have stuff around here.
Those handles and Tiger I stuff for the antenna bases.
Handles for the M1A2.
Nice stuff all of it.
All of the Sherman tools are from you.
Beautiful detail on all.

I am starting to think about figures, I found a great pic online and hornet makes some great Australian heads. I am brainstorming for a good figure to add head to....

I have a set of Royal Model figures that I could use with a Hornet head....

Thoughts?

These heads:
