I’ve seen both attachment points in modern HMMWV ...
Passenger side mirror arrrached to windshield frame
Passenger side mirror attached to armored door window
I’m here at Ft Riley, but guys don’t seem to know or care “we just drive them, we don’t fix them”
Does anyone know if there is a protocol? I’ve search PM Magazine e and can’t find anything either.
The bottom pic is of mirror mounted on door, others mounted on windshield frame. It’s about 50/50 here at Riley. I only focused pics on the windshield mounted ones because most model kits have them on the door and I wanted details if I change it.

Here's a drawing from a TM dealing with the M1151 (but I guess some "artistic licence" is OK ) :

Bruce, from the many photos I've looked at of M1151 series vehicles the driver's mirror is "usually" mounted to the body low on the side while the passenger's mirror is "usually" mounted to the body higher than the driver's mirror. The ones mounted to the doors seem to be the exception, not the rule.

I have a few images with them mounted directly to the doors. Here is an example.

Another. I'll ask on the Facebook group if there is any relevance to this.

They are simply different mounts, at different times, by different manufacturers. The contract for the basic M1151 HMMMWV and the different armor packages just stipulate that they have the mirrors. They don't prescribe exactly how to attach them.

Not as random as I thought.
I discovered the key! Actually, I was told by the maintenance guys at 1ID 1-63AR...
Body mounted:
The windshield w the pop out emergecy release, the ones with the red handles on the inside. The windshield also has visible bolts around the glass.
Door mount:
The windshield with the smooth frame, no bolts.
Here’s some more Ft Riley HMMWVs just for kicks..
