Hey guys,
Has anybody started building this new kit? If so, how is it? Do you like it? Any issues?
I'm about to pull the trigger on it and add it to my ever growing stash.
Thanks

I too am thinking about getting the HIMARS. I have built Trumpeter's M1084 FMTV and M1078 LMTV trucks which it is based on and they went together great with no issues. This one should too.

One think I noticed from the sprue shots is the fact that the kit has the old frontbumper. HIMARS with armored cab has the new frontbumper with the "brows" over the headlights.

Sadly the cab in the kit is not exactly the type used in Afghanistan against the taliban and recently in Iraq against Isis.

If that's the bumper in the Legend update I have two I might let go.

Yes, it is included in the Legend Productions update.

Odd that the box art shows what looks like the correct configuration but the kit part is wrong. Luckily there's an update set...…...

Unfortunatly, Trumpeter still relies on parts of the M1078/M1083 kit. At the pricetag of the kit, a new front-bumper would be a MUST.

Would be perfect if they had released the current armoured cab (left) as there are more than a few things to rework if starting from the earlier kit one (right). Not impossible to do ourselves, yes, but seems mould economy was the only reason leaving out the most used variant.

I don't think mold economy had anything to do with it. This is not the same cab as in their M1078 Armored Cab kit.
M1078 Armored Cab
M142 HIMARS cab
My guess is that they just had the older-style cab vehicle as a reference and that is what they modeled. They announced this kit a few years ago and probably had the reference pics even before that. When was the latest cab version even fielded, ie. how new is it?

I think they use as reference this type of armoured cabin. The armoured cabin of HIMARS appears to be different of armoured cabin of M1078/M1083.

Right, that is what I am saying. They made a new armored cab as opposed to using the incorrect one out of the M1078 Armored Cab kit.
At least they didn't go with the much older, unarmored design.

Are there plans to paint these in camo colors?

I actually prefer the older un-armored cab.

Easy to achieve by combining the cab from an M1078 or M1083 kit with the M142 HIMARS parts. You would just have to do a bit of scratch-building to get the shutters for the front windshield and the roof hatch for the TC.

Yes, not exactly the same, but a common basic shell shape is there and then just details get on and off the CAD. The new armoured shell being so different needs a completely new CAD/mould.
The new armoured cab has been around since at least 2012 when first seen with USMC in Afghanistan (they had used the early one in theatre since 2009 IIRC).

Is the armoured cab in the M1078 kit correct for an M1078/M1083?
Link to thread please if this has already been discussed thoroughly ....

Yes, the M1078/M1083 LSAC cab was correct for a time, 2005-ish to
about 2011-ish. After that, a new armored cab (LTAS) was introduced and is still in use. More on the subject at this thread.

Scratch building is definitely out of my skill level, unfortunately.
