Hi Kurt, I did not mean to start anything, I was just curious after reading the posts about it, so when I was looking all the photos I found seemed to be I channel, so I thought I would mention it. Hope to see you in Danbury sir!
I did not think you were. I was wrong and it needed to be corrected. I read nothing more into it.

I guess the quotes escaped you, huh?
No, I just figured you were one of those people who never quite figured out quotation marks, apostrophes, and parentheses, like the gas stations with the signs reading "24-HOUR TOWING" and ALL MAKE'S SERVICED.
KL
Well, you figured wrong. I used the quotes because I know that is not "angle" but was referring to it. Just as I use the correct term expanded steel when people call it mesh. I just don't find it important enough to correct people on a modelling forum. But since I do run a fabrication shop out of my garage, rest assured, I know the difference.

I looked at the posts on another board the other day, and I liked what I saw with one small exception. Something about the rack at the turret rear looks odd to me. Doesn't matter much, as most were torched off and a new one built in it's place. Noticed that the grenade launchers were empty! Finally! Never saw one with any grenades in them, but beer cans instead. I liked the looks the hull front, but couldn't tell much about the turret shape. If they get that complete irregular shape right, I'll be in seventh heaven.

The rack position is fine, it's the correct shape, but the real ting was made from bent up angle-iron, covered with a net for securing items. I've never seen the contraption at the front, it must be a field mod, since it would certainly interfere with the floatations gear, which leans out from the hull in the front.

the rear rack just looked odd shaped to my eyes. The front guard assembly came out of II-Corp, but think I saw some in I-Corp down by Duc Pho. Lets hope they made the add on armor package as separate pieces. Many tanks didn't have it

Awesome, Big T!
However, I am waiting for Vodnik's (Pawel) critical review on this!

I generally only build German WWII armor, but this was my favorite tank in the Vietnam mod for Battlefield 1942.

Some of you may remember his April fools joke from a while back of a Sheridan release , including CAD images that someone obviously spent a bit of time creating. Maybe he was involved in development of this new kit ?

It was a field mod, to keep tree branches from smacking the driver in the face when driving through heavy bush with his hatch open. There were variations. I scratch-built one when I did the 'ancient' Tamiya Sheridan. Never saw it hang so low though.

Yep I figured that. But I have a funny story about those "tree branches". We didn't put any screening over the front of our M551s, because we never experienced a problem with tree branches in the driver's face. But one day while road marching in Germany, my driver and I (I was the TC) decided we could take a "short cut" off a paved road down a fairly steep embankment which was heavily wooded with 5"-10" diameter fir trees. My driver was avoiding the large trees, but having a great time flattening the smaller trees. About half way down the slope, the track skidded sideways and we smacked square into several larger trees, snapping off branches at about hull level. When we Lagered that night, I hopped off the track only to find several 3"-4" diameter tree branches sticking about a foot straight out of the side of the "hull". Those trees definitely got thier revenge. The M551 outer hull is actually a thin veneer of aluminum over a yellowish polystyrene foam designed to aid flotation. This encloses the thicker, inner aluminum hull. You could actually hammer a nail through the side if you wanted too. When we returned to the motor pool, my troop commander had our troop Motor Sergeant go to the mess hall and get several #10 coffee can lids. The motor Sergeant handed them to my crew with a rivet gun and said-- "you guys had lots of fun-- now fix it". We spent the rest of that afternoon riveting tin can lids over the holes and painting them.

Great story, Russ. Made me laugh. Thanks for sharing it. Wonder what a contest judge would make of a Sheridan with round circles 'riveted' to it's side?

Whadaya know, I actually found a picture showing that very mod on a Sheridan,
I remember seeing another photo where the screen was just around the driver's position. Might have been in one of Squadron's books on Vietnam Armor.

Maybe on the first page of this thread ?
Here's another example. This one belonged to the 3rd Sqdn, 4th Cav, 25th Inf Div (Cu Chi, Vietnam, 1 February 1969) :

The way the hobby is now I can't help but think we will have at least one or two more manufacturers announce new Sheridan kits.

Where is the turret basket though? Academy's M551 Nam version had a really nice one.
I can't understand why Tamiya has not included one. All Nam versions had them (from all the pics I have seen).

Hello Al,
The chain link fence or expanded metal mesh may have served as a brush guard. However, I have been led to believe that it's primary purpose was to serve as an RPG screen.
I know that this is the reason most often given for tracks and M48's carrying a roll along with ground stakes. Was it different for the Sheridan?
Respectfully,

Keigan,
The pics of the vehicle used as an example (4th Cav, 25 Inf Div) shows it fitted with the bustle rack as in the kit.
However other vehicles in the same unit do show the large rack.

Very good, indeed! Thanks for the pictures, Kiyoshi. Tamiya has come a long way since the days of undersized, under-detailed, laughable figures...
