Hi, I am new to this forum but I’ve been reading it for a while.
I need help on the color used by the SAS on the Land Rover called "Pink Panther".
What is the correct tone?
Anyone did it? If yes how is the weathering process for PINK and desert?
I’ve seen a couple of finished models and they were good but I had that BARBIE feeling. I Anyway it is PINK and I am lost. I love this kit and I want to get as close as possible to reality so references would be most welcome too.
Thanks to All.

welcome to the site.

you need not worry, there was a huge variety in the colours, as each vehicle crew mixed thier own!
they got a can of sand and mixed red into it, so you can even find pictures of the same unit with totally different shades.

id say mix it yourself, and just get a colour you are happy with.

cheers

Welcome abaord Groo!

Tamiya made/makes a pink specifically for the 'pinky' IIRC. Would be a good start.

(And don't be pickin' on Barbie. )

I seem to remember reading that the colour was actually made by mixing red oxide primer with white, this was done as an emerergency measure due to the shortage of Lt Stone, this was back in the late 60's/early 70's, when the SAS was involved in counter terrorist efforts in Oman & Aden.

Hope this helps

Happy modelling

I think that the original colour was in response to the different sand colours in various locations. If you get the chance to read Col. John Blashford-Snells book about his time with the army in Oman, the photos quite clearly show pink/red desert. The standard 'desert yellow' or lt. stone colour would have shown up clearly against the local environment.

To weather a 'Pink Panther' remember that sand is very abrasive, and the pink paint was applied directly over the green base colour. Plenty of green and bare metal showing through on the edges and front end especially should do it, and a generous helping of dust.

It depends on how the base Landy was painted. For the Oman period I would suggest Deep Bronze Green. This is available in quite a few paint ranges, I would use Tamiya XF13 JA Green. The colour would normally be semi-gloss but not when weathered from under a top coat.
