Welcome to the odds and ends of modern armor modelling!

This will be a build of an Artesh tank, aka of the Iranian forces. Well, you know the history of the M-47 Patton. Production ended in Nov 1953, but it is still in service with the Artesh in the modernized M variant (aka with the M-60s powerpack). A truly dinosaur!

The other two known operators worldwide are Spain - using them as ARVs, and - Arnold Schwarzenegger himself

Back to topic:
The Takom kit builds easy. Nice styrene, clear instructions, good fit. Tracks are link and length, a proper jig is provided in the box. Very well!



There was only need for a little bit of putty at the rear hull insert:



Also a small gap below the fendders. Nothing to write home about:

I built both of their M-47s. I built the Pakistan version and Iranian version - had issues (my fault) with tracks both times. Pushed them together too much which created a shortened track length. Otherwise - awesome kit! Grabbed another to build another version!

Good start! I have an Italeri M447 in the stash but I haven't found the time or interest to build it. I built one already but man the tracks crumbled in my hands. Ruined an otherwise fun build which a few tiny hiccups (mostly fit).

Be advised that Takom's glacis plate is drastically wrong in shape. The dramatic bulge around the machine gun should blend smoothly into the adjacent area to the left. Takom renders it like a plateau. Sand down the left edges of the bulge, and add epoxy putty if necessary to blend it in. There are plenty of online photos to guide you, or refer to the Italeri kit, if you have one handy.

Well, I missed te front bulge problem, like most other online builders...

What makes a M-47M an Artesh M-47M?

First: The color. Takom gides you to a light drab by AK.
Second: The AA MG. A Dshk instead of the M2. To be added from the MiniArt soviet MG set.
Third: ERA. Yeeeeees, the Iranians upgraded the armor with russian ERA tiles. Good idea. Provided from a set made by Zebrano (iirc).



Added the ERA tiles to the model:



Where are the ERA tiles? - Along the stowage boxes only. REALLY? REALLY!

Very odd. Nothing around the glacis or the turret front. Nada. What are ERA tiles only along the stowage boxes good for? Feels like the Iranians did not understand the theory of ERA to full degree...

Well, I did as they did. Here we are. Enjoy.

Glad to see you building this kit. A freind of mine recently completed this kit and told me it was three links short of a full set of tracks.
He discovered it was less expensive to buy another kit than it was to buy aftermarket tracks.

While I agree with you that the 'bulge' is grossly misrepresented by Takom, as a past AMPS judge, and current national IPMS judge, I would not dismiss the build outright if the bulge is left uncorrected. I've always taken into consideration manufacturing flaws in any kit. Pretty much all of them have at least one. Perhaps I would penalize the build a point or two. But that is just me. In the meantime, I've been in the process of correcting that mistake on the Takom kit over the last few months while concurrently building another three M47's (Testors).

Small problem here: I am a few days ahead of the posts with the real build; due to the lag during wheatering (drying time of each filter, oils and so on). So it would have been neccessary to strip the paintjob to redo the front bulge. Not a good option. Honestly, I am building for joy, not for the Nationals (but I try to avoid known snags, in general).

BTW, the last post shows that I used the wrong muzzle brake. Have to cut it off and to use another one...

I had a similar issue with "not enough links" for my M-47. Contacted Takom for two links, and they sent a complete track link sprue! And at no cost (your mileage may differ).

My build will be as a gate guardian currently on display. Data plate on the rear hull plate shows it as a Spanish rebuild.

Strange on the track links. I built the G version and no issue with the number of tracks.

We shall see about the tracks...

Added an overspray of a lighter base color, then painted the brown blotches. The real ones were crudly handpainted with wide brushes, so I tried to replicate this look at the model. Actually I used no brown, but a brown olive color that matches the effect well. Finally I wetsanded all blotches with 6000 grid sanding paper. Then added filters. Greenish, sand, oranges, browns.





Next step: Chipping.

Added chipping and scratches. Actual photos show a lot of chipping at the toolboxes below the turret. Sldo added chipping around the engine hatches ant at the turret roof.





Next step: Wheatering with oils.

Now I am adding a black wash to the engine vents, not to forgot the rear ones, and some more oils to the lower hull. This will take some more days to dry thoroughly.

Lost a bit of paint below the turret bustle, where the turpentinoid pooled. Still thinking about how to handle this. Keep it as is and simply add some metallig pigmenets - "worn off", or add some fresh paint - "repainted by the crew". We shall see.

Thank you, I am aware of this "modernisation". Well, this is sooo crude and also not present at other M-47Ms from 2011 that I will leave it off completly. It is just too ugly, even for a tank.

Well, that was not intended. Had a happy accident with the pigment fixer. Tried to apply it from the sides with a wet brush, got a lot of edges instead of an even finish. OK, Bob Ross applies: Look, there were puddles at the training ground!
