Hey Chris. Sorry I'm a little late to the party. This might help in some way.

We did a group build on the AFV M60A1 and it can be found on the above page.

Doing some work on the Takom turret. The smoke grenade launchers are modified and the covers are epoxy putty, same for the cover on the search light (not sure I'm going to mount it yet.

Chris the searchlight cover covered the entire light and was open on the bottom. The light was attached from below. Otherwise looking good. What did you use on the turret to fix the texture?

Tom

The searchlight cover is on three sides only and open on the bottom. I sourced the parts from AFV Club and the attachment is super fragile. If I use it it will be the last thing attached. I think there’s an aftermarket resin set that has these parts too. I just used Tamiya Extra Thin and a stiff bristled brush to texture the turret join.

I beg to differ the cover was on all sides with a slit for the cable. Look at the Tamiya Sheridan kit they give you the option of a covered searchlight. It is the same searchlight. A M551 build thread on this site has pictures. I will pull out my 10 manual to confirm. Also checking through pictures of my tanks to see if I caught the cover.

Tom

Tom, sorry I misread what you were saying, now understand what you are describing. I went ahead and removed the putty cover (was wanting to try this again using Knead A Tite putty this time) I made up a paper template to see if I'm heading in the right direction:

The AFV Club kit light

Paper template

Test fit

Found this while scrounging through a spares box Not sure it's accurate but it would be much easier

A few shots after monkeying around with the turret.

This is probably one of the best on-line guides I've ever seen on the M60A1 for building an accurate model. I would add there are some exceptions to the rules-- I found this guide to be spot-on from my perspective as a former M-60A1RISE TC, but I did note an inconsistency in one area-- the air cleaners. There was an add-on kit for the top loading air cleaners for all M60A1s, that had a filter restriction indicator. Some RISE and most RISE PASSIVE top loading air cleaners would have had this indicator, and even some side loading air filters might have had this added. The instructions in the AMPS guide show it as used on the "Marine" version only, but that's not correct. I distinctly remember when the retrofits were mandated in the summer of 1977 for my Squadron-- and the day I examined mine closely on the hardstand-- they are the tiny square "cage like" items shown in the AFV club instructions. The real thing was a day-glo orange colored plastic "plug" that popped out when the filter needed changing. A small detail, but one that shouldn't be overlooked for a late M60A1. Other than that-- this is an excellent guide for the AFV club kit.

Try masking tape for the smoke grenade covers. I’ll wrap a thin strip around the whole thing, seal the edges with super glue. Then do the top part, really pushing it dow to get a good seal, seal the edges with super glue then trim to fit. Done this on many models for a couple decades, holds up well.

Those really look good, more to scale than the putty. Going to try that tonite.

To be more specific, it’s blue painters tape. Give it a try, Chris

Yep, mines up in the attic somewhere. Was looking pretty rough when I packed it away up there 15+ years ago.

I don't have a photo of mine, but each one was individual. They were not issue equipment (well, parts of them were). You took your poncho liner, shelter half, and poncho to the German tailor, and had them sew it up for you. Most folks had snaps for the issue cold weather hood added (as in the TC in the diorama), or had a fur lined waterproof hood added. There were some basic designs, but you could have pockets, straps and snaps placed where you wanted them. I had a Graf jacket made from my poncho and poncho liner, and I had a tankers jacket made from the other half of my shelter half (of course I had to buy replacements for them because those were issue items, and the Army naturally wanted them back when I left Germany!). I kept mine for about 20 years, but somehow it shrank in that time,--not sure how that happened! The poncho also cracked in places as it aged because it was well used. The standard cold weather gear offered by the Army (parka, parka liner, and hood) just wasn't water proof, so many troops hired the unit tailor to make these. some folks used their cold weather jackets. The only thing the Army came up with better was the Gore-Tex parka (I still have mine) but the Graf jacket and tanker's jacket fulfilled the need at the time. In 1988, I had a similar jacket made in Korea, out of my poncho and a poncho liner, so you didn't just see them in Europe. I was transferred to the 25th Division in Hawaii, and didn't think I'd be using it much, so I sold it to my replacement. Wish I'd kept it now.

Marc,
they are simply a US Army wet weather jacket with either a poncho liner or wool blanket sewn inside of it.

Some work on the hull. Wish all kits went together as well as these. I'd be so happy if they released an A3.

You might want to pick up an order from Shapeways for the M85 barrel and barrel extension. Still not individual flutes for the flash hider, but about as close as you can get otherwise.

I’ve got a couple Shapeway barrels left in my stash. The kit barrel is not glued in.
