Just a side note. Look at the tires on the landrover. They are black, cleaner than most I see. If I did a desert diorama and had tires looking like that, there would be many comments about needing dust on the tires. From my experiences in a sandy desert, the tires were black. I think that the type of desert plays a large part on how tires look and most people just assume everything is covered in dust. In a sandy desert, the vehicle is not covered in dust.

The original pink colour was mixed from red primer and white paint in the workshop so you could always take the same approach.
I prefer the Tamiya kit myself but I recently saw someone kitbashing the Tamiya and Italeri kits to good effect.
The link you provided is great - the best photo reference coverage I've seen of genuine vehicles.
A word of warning with some of the published photo references of ex-military and 'restored' Pinkies - some of the vehicles are replicas rather than genuine Pinkies but the owners do not always make that clear.
The other thing to note is that the vehicles changed over time, so if you are going to build one you need to make sure that the features you want to model are correct for a vehicle of that time period.

Depends on the period you want. The Tamiya kit depicts a Series 2 109" Long Wheelbase Land Rover from the 1960's, while Italeri's depicts a Series 3 109" Land Rover from the 1970's (the Series 3 had the headlights moved out from the engine grill onto the mudguards).
Besides Aden, similar Land Rovers were used for years by the SAS and the paratroops in temperate colors. The reddish color used in Aden was reportedly produced by mixing sand colored paint with red primer in unit workshops.

I started working on one of these but it became a shelf queen. I did replace the wheels recently with those from Hussar. This picture shows how far I got.
I have yet to take pictures with the Hussar wheels installed.

Lovely shots of the panther . The vehicles in the video are mostly early pink panthers defined by the weapons panniers that changed shape to the more square variation later .all pinkies,produced had the central headlights as opposed to the wings .

Interestingly, there was a model built and presented in the Model Military International publication and a month or so later they published a letter to the editor from an 'ex-SAS' trooper criticising the build. The 'trooper' that stated
Pinkies had no smoke grenade dischargers
They were never painted pink inside
They never had the cargo on the rear rack
the outside of the tyres were painted
and a few other aspects totally contradicted by the photos here.
As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, and never believe everything that is in print....

My Fav is this one, the line up reminiscent of the well known WW2 pic with Stirling
Also noteworthy is the type of Jerry cans on this one. The Legend set has the metal three carrying bar type seen in some of the other pics.

I think Legends created their resin set based on the photos in this publication.
Which is probably a re-production. Nevertheless, it still looks cool all decked out. Hopefully I can get the mojo back and work on this again.

thanks for all the useful imput. Maybe I try building both kits someday. I just recently learned that 22 Regt. is involved in Syria. But today the have another incarnation of the "Pinkie", a Thales Bushmaster!

Italeri has/had a Series 3, but also a Series 2 Pink Panther, marketed in desert (pink) and european (green+black) version boxes. Not bad, but Tamiya continues to be the better one.
