Don't forget the maple-nut butt-plug! Eat one of those and you were guaranteed not to need to do a kimchee squat for the entire field problem!
The antidote was to drink the fruit flavored beverage powders. Those got the trains running on time again!

Cool thread ! I was down there in "Just Cause" and worked closely with the "tank-like" vehicles in question.
A hearty thank you to Russ and anyone involved in the acceptance of the MRE to the Armys' inventory. They were light years better than the C Rats we had inflicted on us when I first joined up. Who can forget the "beans and balls","beef and shrapnel" and "chocolate choke roll"?
Excellent tips have been already offered so sadly I have nothing to add to that useful list.

As a troop who went to BT in late 1984 and got to eat First Gen MRE's - thanks Russ! Kinda wish you'd gotten the dehydrated beef and pork pucks rejected, but at least they came with the best sides. And the dehydrated strawberries were better than civilian food.
The dehydrated beef and pork patties were most excellent after being crumbled up by smashing their package with the Kevlar or steel helmet, then added to a package of ramen, along with MRE cheese. Ahhh, the memories...

I kind of liked the Chicken a la Puke, heated up with some Tabasco and some rice it wasn't bad. The beef and pork hockey pucks were pretty good with ramen - they were an improvement over Alpo and Ham and Mothers in the C-Rats...good times, but definitely a culinary challenge in the field - still the best job I ever had!!!

Hi Greg,
the current MRE box 440mm long, 230mm wide and 265 mm high. You can use this to calculate the dimensions of the older box. Should be an easy build with some Evergreen strips.
Cheers

Some “good” memories/funny stories with MREs; mine are limited being part of an Australian subunit doing an exchange to the Joint Readiness Training Center in 1998 & being mistakenly subjected to kosher MREs for the duration!
Thanks for the details on the modern MRE boxes, H.-H.
