Aren't colloquialisms wonderful?
I work with someone who has been in the US 35 years, but there are still phrases I'll use that are totally lost on him.
And with so many Spanish speakers around I've learned that English isn't the only language where different countries are separated by the common tongue.
Hauptdeutsch and Suddeutsch, low Russian and high Russian -- so many ways to be misunderstood

And green wheels. Or were they grey?
It was written on a napkin found by the Russians at the commissary in the Reich chancellery for "1946 paint schemes. "
Remember that color plate in the old Squadron Panther in Action that depicted a 1945 Panther in grey and brown? I did a Jagdtiger in that 1945 scheme way back when.

I must be getting old too, as I can’t remember what the purpose of this post was. My wife gave me a small book for Christmas entitled “How Not To Be A Crotchety Old Man”, but my daughter gave me two model kits!

To get back to Kurt's original post.
It is a bit annoying if someone asks for the correct green color for WWII Soviet tanks, and the response is "any green will do"...
(Or, "there was a war on, anything was possible".)

Well in my case I am supposed to be 'slightly' color blind so I always wonder if any of my models look weird to 'normal' folk and I will NEVER respond to any request for a precise color!!

I'm finding myself less and less patient and tolerant of people who just can't seem to wrap their heads around these ideas:
> There is objective truth and value. Some things ARE just better than others, no matter how you look at it.
> There is plenty of space between 100% positive agreement and vicious, frothing, personal attacks. A mere disagreement is NOT a personal attack. Noting a factual error in a statement is NOT a death threat.
> Stating that I do something differently than you is NOT the same as saying that YOU ARE STUPID AND DOING EVERYTHING WRONG!! It is NOT saying you must do what I do.
> Opinions, if based on a misunderstanding or the ignorance of facts, can be wrong. It is not a crime against humanity to point out that an opinion is badly developed.
To be clear, what bothers me is NOT discussions but the people who believe that ANY disagreement about modeling runs counter to the mantra of "It's a hobby, it's supposed to be FUN!"
I guess I'm just getting old.

Getting back to the original point of the discussion, I agree completely with Kurt, and also support 100% Peter's comments (we are in the same club and catch up monthly).
I'm 66 and have been retired for just over eight years, so I certainly qualify as a grumpy old sod. Just ask my kids (no, on second thoughts, not a good idea!) What amazes me with discussions like this is that in five days we have almost completely left the original topic!
As Peter said, if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.
Happy New Year
Regards
Rob

So that explains that lime green T-34 model I saw online recently.
There are some guidelines for everything and that includes mixing colors. There are foulines to keep the ball within you know.
More people need courses in interpersonal communication and listening skills.
Sometimes I feel like I should carry around a bat and knock people up the sides of the head. Instead I smile and laugh at the ridiculousness of the human condition.

I've seen the same dynamic on model railroad sites. There are two camps there, the "toy train" sorts and those who "want to model a railroad". Someone will post a layout plan they've made and wonder if it is good for operations. A guy will write, "Well, you should have a switch there, and there's no way to service this industry over here." Then somebody will chime in, "Why do you take this so seriously? What's wrong with just watching trains run around ?"

I think it's also about posting a reaction that actualy protests the question.
Fe in case of the Soviet green color, the question already implies that the poster wants to be accurate, so responding with "any green will do" isn't answering the question, but ignoring it.
You see this on social media as well. People don't respond to the question, but respond to what they think the question should be.

Ah, that's because we're all secretly politicians in training! (They make a career out of not addressing the question...)
Sadly "social" media has changed the way folks interact, and we need to learn how to navigate the new normal. But as a card-carrying old curmudgeon I will continue to extol the virtues of clear and polite communication (as well as spelling and grammar) such as I learned in school in the pre-microchip era. And the odd joke never goes amiss...

Exactly. It seems like a rebellion against the idea that being accurate or correct is even desirable. Being exact may not be possible, but as Willoughby noted, you can still try to be in the right ballpark or within normal variations.
You see the reverse, too. People get upset with the answers received to the question they asked rather than the question they thought they asked. This is usually the result of poor communication skills though, not a philosophical conflict.

I'm old too! Getting somewhat inflexible in my old age, and some things I tend to be too nit picky about (artillery for one). Still, I've learned to bite my tongue rather than chew some one apart.
I've always respected your views, even though I may not have shown it as I should have. I wouldn't let anyone get under my skin, but just laugh it off!
