January 16, 1991 was when it all kicked off and it's hard believe that it was 30 years ago (hands up if that news is making you feel old right now )

so i was thinking of using that start date, albeit 30 years later January 16, 2021 as the start date for this campaign. So the usual rules apply, any scale, any vehicle, any branch of service, partially started kits welcome as are dioramas and vignettes.

other rules to be discussed and added later on, so who's up for it?

I would be happy to join!

Edit: entering with Cyber-hobbys (Dragon) 1/35 M1A1 with mine plough.

How long will the campaign go?

Yup. I was just getting off guard duty when we got told to fire up our RDF systems that "hostilities have just broken out." My first thought was "Oh SH**!! He decided to invade Saudi Arabia!" US Army 1st Infantry Division...later attached to 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment.

Of course I'm in!

Good plan.... But a few questions.

1.With the swap over to this new beta forums and a more permanent move planned a bit later, will these campaigns go ahead? I'm thinking if this site ceases to be or things get lost in the crossover etc ?

2. Can it be a 12 month campaign ? Would be great if it could....I don't enjoy short campaigns and then not completing ?

3. Will it be only Armour or would you open it up to Tri service ? Not that it matters as I will doing another Chally 1 lol....

And on that day, I was just stepping onto a TriStar to start a 6 month tour in Cyprus with the UN. Although prior to that I was part of a veh maint team that helped prep some Chally 1s down at Bovington.

I was just telling a fellow veteran that I couldn't believe that Desert Storm was thirty years and, at least for me, forty pounds ago!
Great campaign idea. I'm in.

I remember watching my son in-law every night on TV shooting M198's.
The place I worked for is pretty laid back, and it was really interesting watching them go into a full bore panic for a couple weeks. Then they suddenly realized they had 75% of the bases covered. They didn't have enough spare parts packed away, but I called in a lot of markers and soon got over that hump.

Glad somebody brought up the M60 tanks! That one had us scared to death as we had dismantled the machinery due to making room for the new X1100 series (not everything in the TACOM plant was even close to running full bore, and even then was setup for about 90 units a month max). TACOM even went so far as to test the M60 with the M1 power pack (the X1100-5 was still a very early prototype). Then there was the Bradley fiasco! GE couldn't keep them together, and TACOM wanted us to do a power pack (we built a few), But GE got it sorta straitened out (still junk). I imagine the Dragon Lady was in there everyday!! Still in the end all came out well.

Most folks don't realize that the M1 was already at the start of a couple redesigns when they went over there. Seemed like there was a constant panic going on because of design changes. The final drives were like being snake bit! Everyday, I might add. Honestly, we had doubts about the M1 tank in the desert, and were constantly redesigning everything in a panic.

Hi John,

regarding your first question about the site and the cross over to the new one, the simple answer to that is i don't know how that will work in the long run. I'm sure "Big Jim" is doing his best to make the transition as smooth as possible; this site will be archived as far as i know which should still give some access to it, as to medals and campaign ribbons, i'm sure there will be some sort of "work around", in short the campaign will still go ahead in some shape or form, that i am 99% sure of.

your second question about the length of the campaign, is up for discussion. i usually run them over a 9 month period so the start time would be january and the end time in september but partially started kits are acceptable, so in essence that would give you a head start which is almost 12 months and then there is the possiblity of extensions due to issues in real life.

your third question, is a simple yes. it's open to all branches of service that were there, Army, Airforce, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard or other Territorial Army units/reserves, hell even the 132nd Gargunnock foot and mouth (a private running joke with a mate of mine about an imaginary local infantry unit).

Gary,

thanks for your info about the M1's it's much appreciated but you never said if you wished to take part in the campaign..i'm assuming you are though.

well as of this morning 12 people have put their hands up and volunteered to take part so that is enough to submit a request to make this live.

I was going to build my tamiya M60 but since there are a few other people building those i'll go for my M551 academy sheridan i need to check it is the first gulf war and not the second, otherwise i'm gonna look a right idiot submitting that.

or since there are so many people interested in the M60, i might suggest a campaign build just for the M60 alone :-)

Well, I just looked on Wiki for combat vehicles used in ODS and ... ......WOW ..... so many lol ....

I may have to revise the Chally 1 build, and go for something different... this will take some thinking lol ..... my poor brain

Oh your a cheeky fellow. I ain’t falling for it. Now if you let folks cross campaign I trade out the M-60 for a Whiskey Cobra for a two for one. 🤪 I am not married to the 60, just the first one that came to mind for what I have. I have more to choose from: M1, AAV, LAV or Humvee on the ground or H-46, H-53 and Cobra for air assets and probably a few others that slip my mind at the moment.

As I recall they where some 551’s there.

Maybe a Sheridan. I have the new Takom M60 Blazer (Rise?)kit, but it's an Army tank. Needs to be converted to a Marine tank, and they are different. I do have an M1a1 from RFM somewhere. Still let me look into the M60 quagmire or the Sheridan

I'm old enough to remember... and few more before that one too

I'm in. May even get out the bronze bracers (so I can't slash my own wrists) and attempt the Accurate Armour CVR(T) Samson (if my still stagnating CVR(T) Striker is any indication of the work needed)

By all accounts the Takom M60 ERA is gtg for a Marine tank.
https://www.amps-armor.org/SiteReviews/ShowReview.aspx?ID=14245

The other Takom kit is a Army tank but I don’t know the details of that kit.

Not aware of any other Takom M60 kits, other folks have made Blazer and Rise kits.

I'm now considering a dual build. A Chally 1 and an M1A1... Is the tamiya M1A1 a passable option as it will be straight OOB with perhaps some stowage and basic PE ??

I think so for a Army hog, you needed different smoke grenade launchers and APU for a typical Marine hog. Though as I recall Marines got Army stock for GW1. One thing that it misses is the anti skid. Gino has posted a template on this site for where and how it should look. Again it all depends on how detailed you want. Others can and will know more then me.

Thanks Ryan ..... thats good enough for me. The anti skid is one of the reasons I fancied doing an M1 as its a technique Ive wanted to try out for a while and this seems a good as time as any. And if some nice person could send the link to Ginos method that would be great. Thanks all ....... John
