Okay Guys and Gals, there's a new campaign for you! It's new! It's hip! It's cool! It's called "Up Front", a tribute to the World War II Cartoonist Bill Mauldin. If you're not familiar with him and his cartoons, here are a couple of examples: (Text: "Able Fox Five to Able Fox. I got a target but ya gotta be patient." I'm doing this one.)
If you want to see any more, just ask or look in his book "Up Front". This campaign has to be a diorama that has to be from a cartoon Mauldin made. If you're worried about time, don't worry. It starts in October. I hope to see YOU there. Quick! Sign up fast! Thanks for your time.

Does it hyave to be Bill Mauldin? There were cartoons just like it in WWI, and I have a good idea of what cartoon to do.

there were some great cartoons byBruce Bairnsfather did, including the one I want to do

Do you have some good links to his toons? I googled "Bill Mauldin up front" and only got a few links that showed his cartoons. Most are just Biographies or sites selling his books.

I also find it will be difficult to create his cartoon into a dio since many just seem to be two guys sitting around talking. It will be extremely difficult to translate words into a visual. Even the two you posted. THe first one could be two guys hiding under a tank. How the hell you're going to similate them relaying that message is beyond me. The second just looks like two guys crawling.

I guess that is where creativity will come in

You can also check your local library, they should have "Up Front" in their collection.
The entire book (with illustrations) is also included in the second volume of "Reporting World War Two" which is a marvelous collection of front-line journalism.

Creativity? Oh Yeah! The words they're saying can be the title of your diorama. And just because it's two guys hiding under a tank doesn't mean it's a bad diorama. If people read the title, I'd think they like it. The title makes the diorama. After all, this is a tribute to Bill Mauldin, made to commerate him and his cartoons. I just want this to be campaign where you have some fun and laugh a little. Super-detail if you want. It's your diorama. Just have fun and look through a book without it being a reference book . Sorry if I sound like I'm harping, I just really wanted to find a way to show other people his work and get them interested. Thanks for your time.

Try here I found about 50. http://ww2.pstripes.osd.mil/02/nov02/mauldin/

Now I'm was going to do the one with the guy shootin the jeep, but there are a few others that may sway me to do an different one...... something to go through, and think about, now that I saved them to my puter.

Remember, they were cartoons, drawn to make the GI's laugh during a rather miserable period of their lives, before political correctness. This is one to have fun with guys, I have no plans of getting bogged down with historical accuracy, but rather to try to capture the essence of the cartoon and change it from 2D to a cartoon in 3D.

Doh! Stupid me! I guess I wasn't thinking about using the nameplate for the quote. I was trying so hard to try and translate the whole cartoon into a dio that told the message it completely skipped my mind to use an external source for the message. I will have to dig deeper into the cartoons to find one I might like to try.

LOL... Bob, Ithat's the one I was originally going to do, but think I'll do either--- "them rats..... " or perhaps "radio the old man..... " or "I'm Naked.... "
or so many to choose from.....
how about.... "remember that warm soft mud, last summer?" for the "OPERATION: Ardennes Offensive" Campaign.... Kill two birds with one piece.....

once again here's a link to about 50 cartoons:

Those are hilarious! I've seen some in a few books and they will be tough to model with all the stuff hanging on their uniforms.

Another possibility might be "The Sad Sack" -- there was a cartoon that lasted for years, but began in WWII.

Get a bunch of goofy figure heads and you could do this one

"This is th' town my pappy told me about."

I don't think this would make too good of a diorama, but this one here cracks me up every time

"Ever notice th' funny sound these zippers make, Willie?"

:-) :-) :-) I love it!

O.K. since Dave (Grumpy) took my favorite [EDIT]whoops! make that Faust!(Cheers anyway Dave !) Looks like I'll fall back on either or both of these. The top one's caption reads: "Run it up the mountain one more time, Joe. It aint hot enough."
The bottom reads: "Baloney! S-2 reported that MG nest silenced hours ago. Quit wiggling your fingers at me."
The bottom will be a bit of a trial for a figure-challenged individual like myself, but what the smeg. it's all in fun, right? See you at the Front!

Posted three in my gallery, I'll be doing one of them, not sure which one yet, but feel free to do them also. I'm sure with all the talented guys here we'll do a bang up job on this, and have a heck of a lot of fun along the way.

I just signed up for this campaign last evening...not sure what I'm going to do just yet. I had "Up Front" in paper back years ago, but must have misplaced it...anyway, I was fortunate enough to get a hard bound copy on Ebay for $5.00...this should be kinda fun...I've always loved Bill Mauldin's work....

Please excuse the emoticons...the baby is on my lap...yes, at 0238 hours...and wants me to post these for her....

I'm computer illiterate, so I haven't figured out how to post the actual drawing from my "Up Front" book yet, but the photo shows Joe and Willie digging a foxhole with a Sherman rolling by...the caption reads,

"I'd ruther dig. A movin' foxhole attracks th' eye."
