I'm thinking of making a diorama. But I haven't got any money yet so I can begin in September perhaps. I have no presure so I can plan it calm and safe. :-)

Now, I need some ideas. It's my first diorama, and it will be in scale 1:35. Something simple and easy, I don't want to start with something to big and to hard. I haven't thought about any countries, but it will show World War 2. Tamiya in vehicles and Dragon in figures.

How about a simple out of the box tank with a commander driving down the road? Just build the kit, paint the figure, install him in the appropriate hatch abd build a simple base of a road. Since it's your first it doesn't have to be elaborate

I agree with Alan: start with something simple and relatively small. I have two reasons for this approach: (1) the time and expense of acquiring the necessary diorama supplies and (2) you don't want to overwhelm yourself having to learn too many techniques at once. On the first diorama I would concentrate on a good base and groundwork, possibly a simple pine tree such as the trees Major Goose has shown in his recent thread. In addition to a tank commander, possibly some infantry walking alongside the tank?

Yeah, thanks!

But I'm also thinking about something very small. Maybe just with figures.

Well if you just want to do figures there are plenty of DML/Dragon kits for about $7US with 4-6 figures. Sometimes a well designed dio with a few figures can tell a better story than a huge complicted dio.

A bunch of soldiers sitting around cleaning their weapons and relaxing is always good. There are a few out of the box sets for that.

Maybe a MG crew hiding in the brush. Tamiya and Academy have a set of MG42 teams.

Even a few marching down the road (plenty of kits doing that) is easy to do

Some easy starter things to get into diorama building are rock walls, small bushes (lichen on tree sticks), dirt road.
Plan the base too, nice sanded edge. It doesn't have to be fancy, just 'finished'

Maybe just make some soldiers walking by some propaganda posters and at the same time look at them. Then I can practice in making walls and a dirty ground. Maybe I can have some russian posters with german soldiers or just the opposite.

As I stated before DML/Dragon has a lot of different figure sets that you can build straight out of the box and they already tell a story. You may want to take a look at what's out there before you decide on a subject. Since you are attempting to make it simple you don't want to pick a subject and find out no figures are available unless you do some kitbashing and conversions of figures.

I think no-one has copyright on german or soviet posters from World War 2. Since the Soviet is gone and the original nazis to. Maybe the ones from Soviet but not the german posters. There is no company or person that want the copyright on them. I think. So I can just print them as in this tutorial, or is that illegal?: https://armorama.kitmaker.net//features/124

Grumpyoldman: Thank you! Will check the gallery. I'm searching for most black and white soviet posters. I only have a b/w printer. But a good one.

So, here is one part of the diorama. It's a barbed wire. My first scratched built thing ever. I haven't showed you how the diorama should look like yet. But I will post my blueprint soon.

Here is my blueprint/sketch. I made it very fast.

As you can see, the diorama are going to be very small.

Wow, can't believe that you understood my sketch. I thought it was to bad done.

Well, actually I'm going to do a fence with wide planks. I will follow the "making ruined fram house" when I make the fence. I think there should be no problems.

I just got one question. How long/heigh is a 1:35 Dragon or Tamiya figure? Any standard size? Please answer in cm or mm.

Here is an update by the way. This is some Russian fake leaflets I made in Photoshop. I've got some changes in my plan. Instead of two german soldiers walking by I want one russian soldier looking at the Soviet victory posters with leaflets that have fell to the ground. Say what you think:

I've also selected some russian posters to the dio. The first and third posters is the victory posters. They are going to be in the front of the second and fourth posters. Are they to small for 1:35?

And by the way. I have a name to the diorama. "At last".
