HELP!!!

I applied a wash (Mineral turpentine + artists oils) to a figure that had a coat of Humbrol matt cote applied to it 24hrs before. The matt cote dried fine without any white streaks, however the wash is now leaving white patches!

What has gone wrong? And more importantly how do I fix it???

HELP!

Ive tried a few different thinners for humbrols and oils and on some models they seemed to work and others they cracked paint or parts fell off. I never was 100% happy with anything other than Humbrols enamel thinner. This is the best thinner for all purposes and I dont even bother looking for anything else now. The little extra it costs saves on heartbreak when ´something goes wrong.

I never have problems with whiting of paintjobs or varnish. I use ordinary cheap DIY shop turpentine and thinner. Comes in a huge 5 liter Jerrycan and I do all my stuff with that. Never had problems

Hi guys & girls

Ok, so I managed to get the white splotches off by working it gently with clean mineral turps. Fortunately there was no adverse damage to the finish.
I bought some Humbrol enamel thinners, and mixed a wash using this and some Humbrol 29, which I applied to the figure yesterday afternoon. Lo and behold, the same thing has happened again! The wash has left even more white splotches this time.

I have now come to the conclusion that I am doing something wrong. The question is what?
As mentioned I had applied a coat of Humbrol Matt Cote to the figure. Could the thinners or turps be having some sort of chemical reaction to the matt cote? Should I have applied a "clean" coat of thinners to the figure first and only once that was dry applied the wash? I read that in Shep Paine's book.

Thanks

Hi,

I think that could be the culprit....incompatibility of the thinner and the matt cote. I never experience something like that but I think I've read it somewhere in one of my FSMs.

I'm using cheap paint thinner ($ .50 a bottle). For seals and overcoats, I use Tamiya Flat base Tamiya Clear and Future.

If everything else fails, I'm afraid you'll just have to strip the paint off and start all over again.

Wierd thing is the turps doesn't leave white splotches when I use it to clean the other white marks off... Could it be I applied the wash too thickly? I really layered it on...

I wish I could give some insite, but I have never experenced the problems you are having. Like Faust, I have been using the cheapest mineral spirits/paint thinner from the hardwear store for years, and it's always worked fine.
