OK, now I have a question... guns vs missiles. I have the impression that guns against modern aircraft (both helos and fixed wing) with thier standoff weapons and ability to fire and forget are pretty darn useless. Missiles are more difficult to evade, have longer range, etc. The US does not, as far as I know field AA guns any longer, unless there are a few Vulcans still around. So, what do you guys think??

Maybe, with all the jamming technology and chaff that enemy planes can use against missiles, having a few guns on hand wouldn't be such a bad idea.

I was planning on updating my Sgt. York turret with the addition of some type (prob Stinger) AA missiles It wasn't going to be a simple a project as mating the turret on the M1 hull. I plan on using either the Avenger pods as a basis or scratchbuilding a Linebacker-type pod.

I can't speak on the effectiveness of AAA against supersonic aircraft , but against low and slow flying choppers and A-10 equivalents I'd say they would work. Israel up modified their M163 with a whole slew of aiming devices and a stinger pod similar to the avenger's pod. as an aside any gun system gives you one more ground pounding weapon system and concidering the accuracy for taking down aircraft makes an excellent anti sniper system. Saw a vulcan take out the floor under a sniper once.

I think there is to much reliance placed on missle systems. You cannot jam an incoming round, you typically can't evade it because you don't see its exhaust plume and a missle isn't to effective at eliminating attacking troops.
I think the US had the right idea with the M163 Vulcan system and the Sgt. York. The Sgt. York system would be deadly firing 40mm flechette rounds or 40mm buckshot.
I think we can learn a few things from other countries. The Russians have some good systems in my opinion.
