Howdy fellow Truck fans,
O.K., back to my "Move It!" thread.........
Just FYI for anyone who cares, I've finally been able to find a properly sized bit of costume jewelry (chain) that will work for my 'Benghazi' beaded curtain........whew!!....(BTW, got it at Claire's).
I have already built the base for the vignette, but am still working on the elevated section (behind the vehicle). This will show the front side of a desert dune with footprints walking up to two prone British soldiers laying side by side peering through binoculars at something off in the distance.
I am depicting my R/C truck in a desert setting along with some simply painted figures placed in this way so that it helps me tremendously (because I hate figs).
I'm also scratching up a metal roof rack made of bent brass rod. Similar to one you might see on a Land Cruiser. I've already got the outer bars bent to shape, but I still need to add the ladder cross bars to complete it.
I'm wanting to also add some Marston Mat, but don't quite know where to find it in 1/35th scale....
A question to 'Roo...or anyone else who might know.
Is there a photo showing the erected radio mast deployed from these trucks??
tia.

Tread I do not have a pic of that trucks radio mask but I can post a very similar type from another radio vehicle which will do nicely. I will go and upload the pic now while I remember (no all my archives are not here on armorama yet)

Holy ROO-tabaga!!
Wow....I had a completely different thing in mind. Same basic configuration, just a wee bit smaller.....
And how long did it take these buggers to erect these masts??.....a week?
And being as tall as they are they couldn't have been too close to the front.
Thx again 'Roo. Let me see what I can come up with.

Howdy fellas,
A big Thanks to you both. To Grumpy for providing the link to Accurate Armour (I should have thought of that). I will be ordering those (are they brass?) for another project, and for the long term....
And another big *smooch!* goes out to my Australian alter-ego Cliff, for offering to send me 4 bits of Marston Mat from his parts bin. (Jim really needs to add a few more smileys.....I need one with a big, oversized, set of juicy red lips ).
Yes 'Roo, if you would be so kind. I would love the 4 you offered. Now I can add my small bits of 'this and that'. Most of the stuff I'm calling this, are items I would think would be on one of these vehicles if it was in service.
Including a metal roof rack, a mounting strip on both sides of the vehicle to hang both Marston Mat, and radio cables and what-not. I'll try to take some picks of this stuff just as soon as I can.
Oh,.....I've already (this morning) scratchbullt two different chairs (one metal and wood, the other just wood), and three ammo boxes which will be serving as adhoc stairs at the twin doors I cut open.......
Geeeez.....I hope all this stuff is going to be O.K.?
And just wait till you see my dio setting...........I think it's gonna be quite...........acceptable.

Partner......in my eyes, you are always 'Up Town!'...

Howd again,
But the photo you provided me Cliff showing the German radio truck piqued my interest for another reason than just the antenna mast......what's that trailer being pulled behind the truck? And, is there (would there) an Allied equivilent??

my guess is a generater trailer to provide power for the radios. I think I have some pics of both the US as well as the Australian type in my archives here at home. If I have I will add them soon.

Howdy Cliff,
Thx for providing the photos chum. I also appreciate the inclusion of different versions of the trailer as well. It's very tempting to scratch up one of these things, but the dio is beginning to grow in scope enough already.......
In fact, here's a quick bit about how I went about planning/building the diorama base and layout................
This first pic is an overall view showing the 'base' ingredients.
As I've said countless times, whenever I build a kit I always think of it in terms of a 'dio'. What this does is help me envision the entire thing. Sometimes I put a lot of stuff in the dio, and sometimes I only put the vehicle in the 'picture'.
After using many different methods, I have this one that seems to work for me.
I start with a 1/4" sheet of what's called 'soffit' board that I've cut down to a managable size. I use the soffit board because it is stiff, fairly easy to cut to size, and most importantly, one of it's sides are laminated white.
The white side aids me in doing my my layout, and arranging the ingredients of the diorama I have in mind.
Hopefully, as you can see from the photograph, I make a judgement call as to what size i am going to make the dio base (in this case 16" wide X 12" tall) and then procede to quickly scribe pencil marks in a grid pattern to better help me envision my layout. Once I've laid down the pieces that will become part of the dio, I can either add or subtract more grid lines to size the overall dio to fit what I've got in mind.
The only ingredient I've got within my dio 'box' is the layers of foam that will form the support base of my sand dune. These sections of styrofoam have been chiseled and carved down to the approx. size and shape I want to depict the rise of my dune.
In this next photo I've added my half-built Radio / Command truck model in it's tentative position within the dio, and to it's left is just a quick aluminum tube showing the approx. placement of my external radio mast.
In this third pic I have dropped down closer to ground level for a somewhat different viewpoint. This illustrates a little more of the topography, or relationship of the height of the dune, in comparision to the truck.
Just FYI, the dio will be depicting two prone British soldiers laying down at the top of the dune rise peering thru binoculars into the distance. What I am trying to do is create a sense of danger and/or urgency regarding the idea of the R/C truck being potentially spotted by an armed German Afrika Corp patrol. (The height of the hill is just barely concealing the truck, and the radio mast is still deployed).
Whadaya think?

looking real good at this stage Tread. I like the idea of the grid squares as well so in this case 'YOU' are teaching 'ME' a few tricks. I call that fair exchange of knowledge!
