I was asked about adding a non-military generic modeling forum to the site. Obviously we have a lot of kit builders of all types here and it does seem odd (now that I think of it) that we don't have anywhere to discuss these topics. Sure they sneak in here and there (Junk Drawer, General Modeling, Community Forums) but this way there will be a sanctioned place for them.
What'ya think? We can call it the Civilian Modeling Forum. hehe

Let's have a go at it. Most modeling techniques can be used in all fields of our hobby.

or "Lightweights"(No direspect intended, just comparing civilian Vehicles to military...)
or "Civil Engineering"
OK I'll stop now...
[EDIT]- Hey Jim you got your Rank back!

I would think non-military would be better than civilian?

I am happy to have civilian trucks in the Truck'orama forum, but I say go for it. I have not mentioned this type of thing before as this is a military modeling site.

This would be great. I know that many others members and myself dabble outside miltary modeling. I read posts about trains, cars and trucks, so why not. I love to build race cars and i'd like to show them off and talk about them. I'm sure someone else has a hobby intrest thst they like to share.

I say go for it. Just another way of attracting more members I think.

Hi Jim
I'm glad to say we already attract some non-military contributions in the Aircraft forum - they're very welcome and I'd love to see more.
To be honest, if we want to attract the widest possible audience, I'm not convinced a single "non-military" forum is the best answer, because it rather sounds like a sideline.
I'd go the whole way - i.e. let Aircraft carry on featuring civil stuff as it arrives, but create a Truck 'n Car forum and... wait for it (and this is based on the stupendous amount of money I see spent in my LHS on such items...) a Railroad (Railway) forum.
The import thing is to make modellers from every branch of our hobby feel able to call Armorama "home". We all approach things differently and it's often the case that we learn most from people thinking "outside our own personal box" so, yeah!, let's aim for the widest possible membership!
Cheers

Fire Engines. Simple - the modelling work for true gentlemen, FIRE ENGINE FORUM - Got a nice ring to it :-) .. Jim.
But seriously (and I hate to admit it ) but I tend to do with Roo on this one. I think we should keep with the Military modelling theme (but NO Trucks! - None :-) ) I already answered a railroad post twice today...lol

The more people posting, the more we learn. I'm all for giving everyone a place to post. I know I would lurk (at least) in a car/truck forum. As far as railroading, have you seen some of the weathering those folks do?
My view, expansion is good.

As usual in discusssions like these, both sides come with sound arguments for their side of the fence. It would be a (natural?) progression for a popular site like Armorama to attract a increasing number of non-military modelers. As pointed out by Mother, many of us probably do the odd non armor building. I do. My main interest is how ever Military, not just the tanks, but the history and background that comes with it. This is one of the best alround military sites on the web, and I have enjoyed the last 3 or so months showing off my work, exchanging banter and tips in the forums and now I start to get involved in submitting reviews etc. I would not like to exclude anybody from the enjoyment and help that this site offers, but, the name of the site is Armorama ,for MILITARY scale modelers.
I think that adding a non-military forum would show how much interest there really is, more so as almost everything on this site is done by the members. No disrespect to Jim of course, but you know what I mean. If there are enough people how want to make a go of such a forum, it will be a succes, if not than we just carry on with what we do best, mayhem and destruction.. in any color you like, as long as you like OD :-) :-) :-)
We need a soapbox smily and one with a megaphone..
Cheers

I'm all for it, I've been wanting to show everyone the other side of my modelling world, would love to show some of my race car models. I think it could be a "any model related" type forum.
Just my 25 cents Cdn. :-)

Apologies to Henk for quoting from him, because I actually think we're making the same point.
Armorama has already moved beyond being a purely miliary community - witness the Spaceships / Sci-Fi forum...
My point is that, if we are going to going to open the doors to non-military stuff, let's REALLY welcome such submissions an give them all fully-fledged homes...
I'd aim for the broadest possible church. If I had to cite examples of what I mean, I'd point to the original Scale Models magazine and latterly, Fine Scale Modeler... if we really want to go head-to-head with the latter, we have to attract modellers from EVERY area, because we have the major obstacle of a printed magazine to contend with...
Every challenge is an opportunity! A-UK has attracted the interest of the Arts & Craft and Sci-Fi communities, so they're all out there... looking for a home.
Cheers

My personal feeling is that this is a military modelling site. That said many of the community also do the Civvie stuff. Perhaps we could put an "Opt In/Out" on the forum (the same as History/Junk Drawer/etc)
