Whats the most realstic way to paint tracks. I've tried the easy way which is black drybrush on some steel and rust but I hate the way it looks. Very unnatural. Whats the best method?

Recently, I have been painting my tracks to look pretty fresh and then weathering over top however I feel it should look. I spray the whole track Model Master Gun Metal and then drybrush with Aluminum. This gets it looking like metal. Then I might put a rust coloured wash in, a pastel wash to simulate dust and dirt, a ground coloured drybrush, overspray the whole thing with a thinned brown paint, glob some mud on it, etc........
I guess I am basically painting and weathering the tracks in the same order as it would happen in real life. I've had success with other techniques too, though. There are a lot of things you can try.
