Hi everyone,
This is my Super Pershing I last posted in progress pics of early last fall. I actually finished it in October but am just now getting around to posting some pics. This is the Tamiya kit with the AA conversion, WW2 Production tracks, Collectors Brass .50 cal, and a little scratch work here and there. I'm not totally happy with the "ma deuce", it just doesn't look "right". After talking to a couple of people yesterday (both of whom are well informed on the subject) I think I'm going to replace it with a different one. (I'm open to suggestions) The base is temporary, I have plans for one with some groundwork, and maybe a figure, that I hopefully will get done in time for the IPMS Nats this Summer. I based my SP on the pic in Belton Coopers book "Death Traps" where it was still undergoing testing. So, a recent paint job with just some dust, and no crew gear. Sorry about the pics, I'm still working on my photography skills . All comments welcome.
Cheers,
Mike

Looks Great Mike! Are those the kits tracks or aftermarket? Your weathering is "Just Right" I like them dusty but not too muddy! Fantastic job with great pictures. My one nit pic is ...... where is the towing pindle? I see the bracket for it but no hook. Did you leave it off intentionally?

The tow pintle is stored on the rear hull, just to the left of the exhaust pipes.
You can barely see it in the picture...

That is one mean looking beast - I'd love to do one myself someday.
Even though this is the RRB I have to say that I can't actually see anything to criticise! A really good build.

Thanks for the compliments guys, to answer a couple of questions.
Chad, yes the stowage brackets did come with the conversion. They are PE and very delicate. In hindsite if I was doing this kit again I would use the PE ones as a guide and use thin plastic strips to scratch the racks because they bend very easily.
Scott, as Shaun already mentioned the pintle is in the stowed position on the rear hull plate. The Tamiya kit gives you the option of doing this, and that is what I chose to do.
Thanks again,
Mike

Looks awesome ! Camo scheme looks really good, and the weathering is perfect. I agree with the others, your tracks look fantastic ! I really like how you did the add-on armor.
Super work on your Super Pershing !!
Cheers !

I think the barrel is a tad on the short side :-) Nice build. Can't really tell from the pics, but are the periscopes on the turret cupola glossed? Definately a beast of a tank. "Q"

Thanks for the compliment Matthew, yes the periscopes are, gloss black with a light coat of clear green over that. Once dry I dusted them with a light coat of pigments then wiped a little off. Due to the angle of the pics you can't see this though. I agree with the beast remark also, it's kind of a bada$$ look with all that extra armor and that huge barrel.

IMHO:
It looks like you might have set a new standard for armor builders here.
I definately think you "raised the bar" a few notches.
Tom, being familiar with the work of some of the other armor guys who are regulars around here; Brian Gray (ex-royal), John Steinman (Sticky), Jim Lewis (Guntruck), and Rick Craig (thebear) to name a few, that is very high praise indeed. Though I was pleased with how the Super Pershing turned out, I still feel I have a ways to go to reach the level some of them have attained. (if ever ) Regardless of that I really appreciate the compliment, I have to admit it was a kick in the pants to see it. Many thanks!
Cheers guys,
Mike

Mike - I know this is the RRB - but I find nothing to carp about either. Fine modeling effort, sound construction, smooth and even paint finish, and appropriate weathering for those who know the subject. If you take it to the Nationals, I'd recommend putting a little info on your entry sheet for those Armor Judges who do not/or are unaware of what you're modeling with your Super Pershing.
I really don't have a big problem with "Ma Deuce" either - it looks nice and the level of detail is equal to the rest of the details present on the kit. If you're still uncomfortable with the HMG, I'd humbly suggest the new Academy or Skybow "'Deuce" to retrofit to your kit. Both are very nice and would compliment your model's presentation.
Even without that change - I'd be happy to call your model my own. I love that gun barrel! Model on!

A wonderful build and finish. As mentioned before, not much to critisize (as this is the RRB ). There is however one thing I noticed, there is no aerial, but the bottom part of the aerial sits on the turret? Other than that, get it in the natinals, and watch the awards roll in..
Cheers

Gunnie, Nervreck, and Henk, thanks very much for the compliments. Nervreck, pick it up if you get a chance, it is a nice conversion and goes together very well. Jim, I actually have a couple of paragraphs of background info on the Super Pershing typed up for the very reason you mentioned. It's a pretty obscure tank and a lot of people don't know much (or anything) about it. You're also the second person to reccomend the Academy .50 to me, so I'm going to have to take a look at it. Henk, in the pic I'm basing the tank on there isn't an antenna visible so I left it off. Again thanks for the compliments, they are very much appreciated.
Cheers,
Mike

Mike your Super Pershing is super .. Pun intended ... You've done a great job at cutting back those fenders ..I'm too chicken to try and get that right!
Now if I were to say anything at all (and only because this is the RRB ) I'd try and make that tamiya suspension look a little more nose heavy ..but this is really just a nitttttttttttttttttttttttt pickkkkkkkkkkkkk. Awesome job Mike ..I'm sure you'll be dragging home a few rewards with this baby..
I was wondering about that hand painted 2 on the add on armor ..was this added later . I think it looks better with out it..
All the best
Rick
p.s. Thanks for the compliment ..Your name should be added to that list as well..

Rick, first let me say thanks for the compliments, on the model itself and on my place on "that list". To answer your questions, the suspension is still workable so I might just drop the nose a tiny bit more. As for the "2", in the pic I'm going by, it's not there yet so I figure it must have been painted on further down the line. How's your M4A3 coming along? Post some pics of it when you get it painted.
Thanks again!
Mike

Mike, thanks for postng it, unusually, i'm posting here and I honestly don't have the knowledge of this vehicle to make a valid 'criticism' ... However, it does, to my eye, look spectacular! Those barrels above the main gun, are they part of some recoil mechanism? As I said I know nothing of this vehicle... Thanks again, Jim

Hi Mike .. I know the pictures you are using and I was wondering how late it was before they added that number..maybe even post war???
Yep I got it done in time for the show last weekend ...I'm hoping Bryan's (ex-royal) pictures come out better than mine did ,but I will have some detail pictures taken next week end.. I'll post them as soon as I get them on line ..

Thanks again guys for the compliments.
Jim, the barrels above the gun are equalibrator springs that were added to help counterbalance the longer barrel. If you're interested in a little more historical info on the Super Pershing check out my two original "in progress" posts at the links below. The info is not in the original posts but scroll further down and you'll find it. Thanks again Jim.

Yeah, I was thinking about that myself, I have heard it was possibly post war. Steve Zaloga has done an article about the SP for Military Modeler that is due to be in the next issue I believe. It will be interesting to see if he has any further info on this. Looking forward to your pics, also Bryan's show report. It sounds like it was a good one.
Cheers,
Mike
