At that time, Holland itself was pretty much in ruins, with much of the infrastructure destroyed.
The US simply threathened to stop the Marshall aid program for Holland... which was much needed here.

Quoted TextWhy did you require US support? Or was it the lack of US support that did not allow Dutch forces to continue the fighting?Eventually we stopped the war under a big presure of the UN (mainly through the USA). The USA. would, when we (Dutchmen) didn't gave up our colony, they would stop the support (Food, machines etc.) to Holland.
He means the support from the US to build up the country again after World War 2. The US supplied us with food and supplies to build up the Netherlands again. So this is the help we received in Europe, not in Indonesia.
The funny thing is my grandpa told me about this too. Officially, the UN didn't wanted Dutch equipments and weapons to be transported to Indonesia. So while on the ship from the Netherlands to Indonesia, the soldiers had to hide their rifles in the structure of their bed (tubes were hollow, that's where they kept their rifles) and at the lowest deck on the ships, every singe square meter was used to stow brencarriers, tanks, jeeps etc. Just to fool the UN. :-)
Thanks for the kind words to al

That's really good Martin, and I'm really glad that your grandfather loved his present.
Reminds me of why I charge for materials only when I make a model for a veteran - I figure they've earned whatever they want. The look on an old guys face when he's presented with a model of the tank he crewed is something to remember for a long time.

Yeah my grandpa looked at the dio from every possible angle and said things like "hey I know that sign" and "that's my vickers!". The rest of the day he only walked from his chair to the diorama and back all the time :-)
Maybe in the future I'm gonna do a second one...with a M3 scout car or 6-pdr AT gun. Hopefully I can sculpt my own figs then as there aren't any figures with the Dutch camouflage uniforms which they used from mid/late 1948 to 1950. (tropical figures are hard to find anyway)

Well, check the pics for the results.....a pretty simple dio...
A simple dio can be great too! You just proved it :-)
I like what you done to the Tamiya kit and made a pretty rare model there! And the jungle is just right to me: there were many flat parts with low bushes etc.
So it's all historical and geological "correct".

...well he just loved it :-)
I do also!
I'm very glad to see models and dio's based on Dutch military. We have such a history in this.
Specially during the 'interbellum' (period between WW1 and WW2) we had a nice scala of armoured cars, including ones from DAF. That we had only one of each type was a different story... :-)
(Hey, we got 1 real tank when the Germans attacked us! And we got it back after the war also!!)
But serious: I wish there were more Dutch military models out there and you did a great job rebuilding this kit!
The period you modelled is (in my humble opinion) one of the blackest pages in our history as we practiced all what we've learned from our German occupiers...
After 5 years of occupation you would think we should have done different back than...(don't get me wrong: no offensive to your grandpa! He just did what he must do and ideas where different that days!)
But your model placed it exactly where it belongs: in history; lest we forget!
Keep on modelling!

As we talked about in MSN..i thought it was an excellent idea from the beginning. And it looks like you were able to pull it off nicely. Everything looks most excellent. I like the plant that you scratched from the aluminum and wire..Great Job..I'm sure your grandpa was proud..

Martin u did a great job !!!! i really like ur little dio and made ur grandpa proud with his duty when he was in Indonesia.
and it is an intresting story that u tell us, because when i was an elementary school in indonesia, we only learned a little about the war and the political situations in Indonesia that time(from Indonesian prespective), maybe ur grandpa could tell memore story about that
what city of Indonesia did ur grandpa serve? maybe u could send me PM for pics if ur grandpa were in "Batavia"(Now Jakarta) , i'd like to have a look that old pictures

great dio mate and even better story behind it, I should think your grandfather is more pleased than you can imagine. Reminds me of when I made a model of a mini cooper when I was about 10. My mum had just bought one as her first car and its was a real old banger but she loved it. I tried to copy it got the same colour paint, it was a real disaster but I thought i did a good job. The lack of sweets for that months pocket money spent on the model was more than worth it on her birthday when I gave it to her.
Like I try to tell my kids it not how much the gift cost but as to how and why the gift was chosen.
For at least today you have restored my faith in mankind, thankyou
Regards

Hey mate,
Jakarta is on the island Java. Here, Dutch marines had to fight. My grandpa was part of the normal army, the KNIL. He wasn't really stationed at 1 place. They searched area's and manned outposts. However if they were pulled of the line they went to Padang, on the westcoast of Sumatra.

Sorry, no pics of Jakarta!

The vignette is a good idea, but maybe you should substitute the plants, they look too artificial.

I will focus more on the whole jungle setting next time I'm gonna build a jungle dio (the Nam campaign!)
This time, the idea was just to give a jungle feeling. Btw, I don't think the plants look really artificial but that's I think just a matter of taste.
Thanks for your reply!

Always great when you can give an old soldier a piece of his history. Looks like your Grandfather really enjoys it. I did something similar a while back (ablout 12 years ago). My wife's Grandfather was a B-17 ball turret gunner in WWII, shot down, POW, the works. For Christmas, just after we were married, I made him a model of his aircraft in flight, mounted on a base with the 15th AF patch and a name late with his name, crew # and aircraft #. He loved it and displayed it proudly in his den till he passed away. I have it back now, and it is displayed proudly in my home with his photo.

Ah ok...well that's something I will keep in mind next time. I will include much more sorts of plants then too, so you won't have this feeling then again.
And I know ment no offence, I just explained why I used the plants like this :-)
Thanks for the help

That's really cool you made the model....you've got a pic of your B17?
Thanks,
