Honestly now - how many unbuilt kits do you have?

I enjoy modeling for many reasons! I usually buy and build, I am allergic to collecting unbuilt kits. (So is my wife...)

I knew a guy a while back that moved and 17 of the normal sized moving boxes he had were unbuilt models. I don't know how many models it was in total, but talk about the need for a lot of storage space.

On the funny side, I stored a box of about 20 unbuilt kits with my brother before moving to Sweden. I went back 2 summers ago to retrieve the lot. The lesson learned is to never have your brother store models for you if he places them in garage and lives in Phoenix!! Most everything was a pile of styrene!! :-) >:-<

In my last move in August, I had 8 of the wardrobe boxes (the ones that have the metal bar on top for holding clothes, about 4 1/2' tall) filled with kits. Plus several large boxes filled with smaller kit like 1/72 scale aircraft and armor.

It's really an addiction.

In about 2 years I have accumulated about 16 armour, and 27 air kits plus all the aftermarket extras and books to go with them. This all after a 10 year absence from the hobby. I still have a few decades of hording to do and I fear what my workroom (AKA storage room?) will look like then

I have about 10 to 15 unbuilt kits, about 7 or 8 started porjects on my table, unknown number of figures for all these kits, and not to mention my stash I have at work. That the one problem I have about working at a hobby store. Something new comes out and it goes right into the private stash. I keep trying to tell my boss not to pay me, just let me go home at the end of the day with a couple of items. My pay check goes right back to him.

Hi Kencelot!

it is no typo....it is the result from the experience of shortage in kit supply during the 80ies and early 90ies in austria...and thus I started to purchase as much kits as possible from whatever source..
and also many shops closed down and had irresistable special offers...

regards, werner

I have something like 50 unbuilt kits (1/35 tanks, AFV and DML figures), and the worst part about of accumulating this kits is that often they become backdateds by new toolling releases
For example: I got an old Tamiya Tiger (full of incorrections and toy like model) and now we have new Tamiya Tigers retooled, correcteds and in three versions. And I´ll build mine just for fun, not expecting to get a masterpiece.

If nothing else, tankbuster and armouredsprue, at least you have plenty of kits for experimention of all sorts. I have only precious, few and dare not run an experimental, say, camo paint job.
One day I'll have get my hands on a cheapo kit and try some "lab" runs. :-)

Tankbuster,
I can tell I am in the wrong group! (but not really) 1000 plus kits...where do you store them all? It must be a room full! But do you have them catagorized? That would be a room to visit. Sort of being at a candy store with unlimited credit!!

I take it you do not move around too much?

I still think the biggest problem with model building is what to do with them after they are made. Not everyone, and I'm thinking of Tankbuster, has the possibility of putting some of the finished work in a museum. Storage and storage again!

But ain't that the truth though!?! If I run into great deals I always end up with more than I had thought of!! But sadly enough great deals are hard to come by in Sweden. The 15yrs I've been here only one store has gone out of buisness. Came home with less than my wife expected, I knew I should have bought more!!

I have about 185 kits stashed after only about a year back in the hobby. There are just so many great kits to buy, so little time.
By the way, where did you guys find this great picture of me? :-)

You all know Murphy's Law, if you do not buy it now, it will go OOP and be worth beaucoup bucks on eBay! Glad I went back for that DML M4A1 when it was on clearance at a going-out-of-business Ben Franklin's, but I had kicked myself for buying only one of the Italeri M4A2 "Jumbos" and giving it to a friend (until it was reissued with the calliope).

This is a slow modeler calling... :-)
So far I have at about 40 kit in my store. As I prefer to build dioramas, I need a lot of time to construct things beside my plastic kits. Additionally I like to scratch build a lot.

to be serious, this amount of stapled kits is nothing special among the people I know..
my hero is karl, with 2500 unbuilt ones. but he has an own cellar compartment for the most of them..

I have stored about 1000 kits in my hobbyroom and the rest, mainly 1/72, 1/48 aircraft and 1/76
tanks rests in the house of my friend. but I am afraid that the next "outsourcing" becomes necessary soon. for the storage I donate him the one or other diorama of me. so space in my glasscases is set free from time to time as well.
I know other modellers who are bringing their works to modelling shops and display them for 6 months or longer to solver their storage problem at home.

Werner - I think everyone just wants to see photos of these stacks of models. Kind of like kids in a candy store.

Viking - Welcome to the site. We are getting quite a few Austrian users here aren't we? I checked out your MSN site. Very nice work. I wish there were some larger (detail-wise) pictures of the dioramas. If you have any we can put them up here on the gallery. As Werner will atest, space is not a problem. hehe

Wow guys,

First a few comments, then a question.

O.K., ......if the wife is listening, I only have about 4, or maybe 5 kits I haven't built.

If the wife is NOT listening, then...I think I'm somewhere in the 150 to the 200 range. But
that's only my armour collection. Next there's the Sci-Fi, Aircraft, Figure, etc, etc...
Enough of that, I think were all in the same dingy.

Next,

Tankbuster: Impressed beyond words with your total number of kits. My only question, and
I think your response may be of worth to the rest of the posters here is; How the heck do you
get them past your 'significant other' without the prerequisite " what do you have there honey?"
Any input you have regarding this sometimes covert practice would be greatly appreciated by
the group I'm sure ;- )

Armouredsprue: Excellent point about the retooling issue regarding new models vs. old models,
especially with companies like Academy and Italeri. Talk about getting your money's worth from
a mold!

Sabot: Spot on! Your reference to the OOP issue is absolutely correct,in fact that's exactly WHY my
unfinished model collection is the size it is!! Because being the age I am, I've too often seen models I
thought would 'always' be there just dissappear when I wasn't looking I-(

Just my 'two cents'

Many Thx,

TreadHead

P.S. OH! After reading about ALL the unmade boxes of models we ALL have collecting dust
in our various storage rooms, how about we all take a gander thru them and post a list of some
of the extra modelswemight be willing to part with for the sake of the other military modelers here
on the Forum..........Hmmmmmmmmmmm?

sounds good, that's why I recommended a classified/trading post folder. Give us a chance to rotate our stock amongst each other!

The next kit that I think will go dinosaur on us is Tamiya's original M4A3. It still is an outstanding kit at usually less than half the price of the current M4A3 75mm. I bet Tamiya will disappear it in order to increase sales of the newer (more expensive) versions.

I don't have that many armor kits, probably around 8, but for some reason I do seem to have more boxes of figures than armor. I must have 30 boxes or so of all kinds of german soldiers. How'd that happen? Oh well, I'll get to them soon enough.

Guess I'm a slouch here - I have around 400 unbuilts in a Storage Locker. My wife, actually, actively participates in my collection, and nothing goes in there she doesn't know about. After all these years, if she ever decides to get into the hobby, she's got a good stash to pull from. Lucky guy I guess.
