Well, I'll throw a multi part question out for the crowd:

What was the actual designation of the part commonly refered to in Sherman modeling circles as the "Transmission housing", how many different one piece casting designs were used on standard M4 series medium tank production?

tie breaker: What were their part numbers?

How about "differential housing"
I can think of at least two different casting designs off hand but I have a feeling there are more.

Part numbers, I'll leave that to others.

That is only part of the actual nomenclature.

Okay, how about "differential and final drive housing" along with four different castings?

Good job Chris! You win, so, as I understand it, you get to post the next question.

Okay then. What did the "E4" designation signify on the M4A1E4 and M4A3E4 Shermans? Note, I am not referring to the "E4" in the Hunnicutt Sherman book.

Is it the E4 designation given those veh rebuilt after WWII that were armed with the 76mm and the double sided EEC which required the suspension trucks to be spaced away from the hull?
Do not have the Hunnicut book but did build a Pakistani M4A1E41

INDIA11A is the first one to get it correct so he gets to ask the next question.

However, not all of them had E9 suspension. Delbert is correct also. And Bryan, the 76mm gun could be mounted in either a low or high bustle turret.

"E9" I was trying to rememember but suffered from "Brain Lock".
Anyway My question is; List the 3 main track types used on HVSS Shermans ("T" number and description)?

This isn't a Sherman trivia question per se but a Sherman model trivia question. What were type of Sherman were depicted in the two 1/32 Monogram Sherman "Armor Series" kits released in the early 70s?

(They were the very first Shermans I ever modelled!)

They were both M4A1s. The Callipe was a later production with the M34A1 mantlet and the Cullenmodel was an earlier M4A1 with the M34 mantlet.

I built them both as well, way back when...

The M4a1DV was the Calliope while the Cullen Hedgerow devise was on an early DV M4 if I remeber right ...I still have my M4A1 full of dust down on my shelf!

Bear is right. There was an M4 ("Hedge Hog") and M4A1 ("Scremin' Mimi"), both direct vision, but they had an odd mix of features, from the M3 lower hull up to the late/modified turrets.

Bear has the correct answer. I smile today when I think of the joy I experienced opening up that "Screaming Mimi" Sherman Calliope model box. What a moment for a 7 year old kid!

Go for it Richard. You're up to post the next question.
