Hi!
Im trying to depict the scene from Arnhem where Major Digby Tatham-Warter of 2nd Parachute Battilion, A company is trying to break out of Arnhem being the last to defend the bridge. This just before his capture.(its the guy with the umbrella).
Heres a picture of the setting.
However Im trying to find a catching title for this diorama so I could use some suggestions. I usually dont have any problems with that but with this one I have yet to find the title.
So far my idea is:
"-:Dont worry, Ive got an umbrella."
Which is a quote from the major himself.
Other comments andsuggestion is welcome as well.
For those to wish read more of the major and Arnhem or simply get inspired, I can recomend this link.
http://www.arnhemarchive.org/frames.htm
Thanks

well, in the movie "A Bridge Too Far" did his character not make some sort of reference about wanting the Germans to know he was a British gentleman by use of his umbrella in his kit? I find it relieving to know that it wasn't some sort of "dramatic effect" added in to the movie - it accentuates the swagger that I feel the Para's had / have - let alone a soldier in the in Service of the United Kingdom. Obviously I'm not able to give a title to use in reference, but I do like the idea of the Umbrella.

I like the suggestion when it rains it pours. I can't really make out the umbrella detail in the photo but it looks like it's going to be a real winner.
Wasn't the character in the movie a different name? Wonder why they would have used real names for everyone else and changed the one with the umbrella?

Well, the motto of The Parachute Regiment is "Untrinque Paratus" (Ready for Anything), if that sparks any ideas.

Hi Toke, beautiful piece of work every thing looks great.
How about an old favorite of mine [ THE DOORS, Jim MORRISON ] " RIDERS ON THE STORM".
Or how about, another reference to the movie - " Thats a pisser, you bring your umbrella, and I have my batman pack my dinner jacket "
Hey I tried, great build - please - more pics. - Cheyenne

Now I might be wrong, but didn't Major Digby Tatham-Warner end up badly wounded in the cellar next to Frost? This is where Frost' according to the book 'A Bridge to Far', asked him why he always carried 'that bloody umbrella'. Digby replied that it was to identify himself, as he always forgot the password... I know Frost was captured, but can't remember of hand if Digby escaped.
Cheers

I just checked my DVD and the umbrella character in the movie is named Harry Carlyle. Don't know why they would not use the real name.
BTW what figure set did you use?

Henk, yes in the movie Digby was talking to Frost in a cellar both wounded, don't have any historical references handy just now, but in the movie my read was that Digby died just after talking to Frost about carring the umbrella because he always forgot the password and only an English gentleman would carry one. I'd have to check Cornelius Ryans book A BRIDGE TO FAR because it was definitely mentioned in it. - Cheyenne

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.
Still I have not decided. But some I like more then others, especially:
"Untrinque Paratus"
"Crikey! The Huns just won't take 'no' for an answer, will they?" (But its perahps a bit long for a title? But it sure captures the attitude of the Brits.)
"Every man a king" (Sounds good but Im not really sure about the meaning of it? If someone with english as a first language could eleborate?)
Ill try to get some more pics but it would probably take a few days.
The figures are from the Cromwell Models set and honestly they need a lot of care. Heads are from Hornet and Resicast. Hands are a mix of sculpt and Hornet hands. Ive also added rifleslings, chinstraps using lead foil and Aber buckels. Rest of the equipment are Tamiya with some exception from Dragon. The radia is detailed from the pictures of the radio. Left to do is the eagles on the berades and insignina of the major, radio-operator and the man to the right in the back. Some of the fellows also needs shoelaces.
Heres a short except from the site Ive linked to:
Once it was clear that the fight was almost lost, most of the remaining defenders were scattered into Arnhem to try and make their way back to Oosterbeek, leaving Tatham-Warter and the 2nd Battalion behind at Brigade HQ, where they could still fire upon the bridge, to fight until the last. The massive mortar barrage that had pounded the British positions for the previous four days was now concentrated on their small perimeter. The position was untenable and so Digby concocted the plan of slipping men out of the area in two's and three's so that they could hide overnight and escape the bombardment, but return before dawn to retake their positions and still be a threat to the Germans the following morning. Unfortunately the area was utterly surrounded and very few men escaped. Major Tatham-Warter, together with almost all of his Battalion, was captured.
He was admitted to the St. Elizabeth Hospital, but only stayed there throughout the daylight hours of Thursday 21st before escaping with his Second-in-Command, Captain Tony Franks. After dark, once their German nurses were out of sight, the pair dressed themselves, climbed down from their first floor window, and then crawled through a garden next to the hospital before, exhausted from their ordeal over the previous days, coming to a halt close by.
Thanks shipmates!

Perhaps a bad one:
"Untrinque ParaPLUtus" or "Untrinque Para-plu-tus"
Paraplu is the french word for umbrella...
Or: "What's the weather outside, chaps?"
I also like Peacekeepers option: "We're sorry, but we cannot accept your surrender old boy!!" as that's a definte link to the movie.

"Red Devils of Arnhem"
Posted: Wednesday, May 18, 2005 - 01:14 AM UTC
I read up on this again last night and Digby Tatham-Warter did escape indeed from 'Elizabeth Gasthuis', the hospital in Arnhem, after being taken there after his capture. He proceded to help the Dutch Resistance to collect various Para's who either escaped or evaded the Germans, escaping with them over the Rhine some time later.
The character dying in the movie must have been a piece of 'Artistic Licence'..
On a note for your dio, as you are obviously in the planning stages, remember that all the buildings around the bridge where very severly damaged, having been systematicly reduced to rubble by the Germans in an attempt to break the defence of the bridge. It might also be an idea to reposition the figures with the guns, to make them guard all around, rather than from one direction, to convy the fact that at that time they were completly surrounded from close distance..
Cheers
Henk
