hey all, regarding my shermi dio
the house that the germans are staying in, i want to have it as if the germans have been sleeping there. did the germans have standard issue sleeping bags, etc.
and would germans or any army's soldier for that matter rest (NOT SLEEP) but rest with his blanket or whatever at his post?
what i am trying to say is, how did the germans sleep, and what did they sleep in, other than the obviouse of a bed?
thnx
matt

I dont think there was any specified protocal when it comes to that, i mean, i doubt it said in the german field manual "soldiers must/must not wrap themselves in a blanket while on watch. This is just something i believe you should decide for yourself, and has no yes or no answer.
As for the sleeping bag, i believe they had a sleeping mat and blankets that were standard issue.
Cheers

Reminds me of the old expression, "Let a sleeping German lie". :-) :-) :-)

Never stand up when you can sit down.
Never sit down when you can lay down.
Never lay down without going to sleep.
Soldiers will grab sleep when and where they can, with or without a sleepingbag/blanket. Any depiction will be fine.

I've seen reference pictures of a lot of soldiers at rest. One picture shows a bastogne-esque setting but in autumn or spring, the german soldier is sleeping soundly - amongst the branches of a fallen tree, with his head propped up on a bare branch.
Soldiers really did sleep whenever and wherever they could. If you ask me, back then with a war raging around them, warmth was a bonus - comfort was a distant memory.

PLMP110 makes a very good point with his pic... I think we've all forgotten the usefulness of the slit trench...
