....the muzzle end of Challenger II gun. I need a close-up of the thingie on the top. I understand it's kind of a sensor? There seems to be a wire of some sort on it.
Anyone has a good picture?

Don't think there is a wire that goes to the Muzzle Referance System. It is an optical system, very similar to the one on the M1 Abrams. There is an optic in the tube on the tip of the barrel. In the gun mantlet, there is another optic. The fire control computer reads the differance the barrel is form a landmark on the tube on the muzzle. By reading the slight variation either up, down, left, or right, the fire control computer can adjust its aimpoint to ensure the round will hit what it is aimed at. Pretty neat system, but no wires.
Here'a more info on the M1 MRS.

It looks like some kind of retaining wire attached to a pin or something, I see what you are talking about but I can't find a clear shot if it. Maybe Prime Portal has a better shot.

It looks to me (from the pics I've seen) like the hood pins on '60s and '70s muscale car hoods. But again I haven't seen a really good close up pic of it iether.

Maybe it is for the muzzle cap and it just extends over the sensor?

you would think there would be a ton of pictures somewhere

It is a small retaining wire for a cotter pin, which in turn holds a thin sheet metal cover for the top of the MRS. If Dan Hay, call sign "PiperDan" sees this thread he has done a nice sketch of the C2 MRS, which shows the detail quite nicely. Maybe a moderator could change the thread name to something like, "Challenger 2 MRS details needed"

All it is is a r clip being held by a wire rope that holds the MRS shroud cover down and theres no sensor its a mirrior under it for the light source to reflect off.

I was in Quebec city two years ago with my wife. Beautiful city!! There was even a model show while I was there. There were some pretty awesome models.

So you go to all the shows hey.... Used to do that before getting the wife. In fact I've been back modeling for only one year. Back then I used to build airplanes, but they're too tough to build so I switched to armor.
The Challenger is my first serious project but I lack info. All the info seems to be for WWII subjects.
How about you?

Hey Jim ..Nah I can't make all the shows either but I do make it to the local shows and I try to make it to at least one show a year a bit further away . Last year it was Halifax and this year it looks like it'll be the Show in Ottawa in September.. I usually build WWII armour .. Both German and Allied but I must admit Shermans are often not far from my desk top. The Challenger II is my first attempt at Modern Armour and I'm enjoying this build a lot. I'm a bit like you as I don't have too much info on these modern beasts but I did find this site which I'm using for the few details that I plan to add
http://www.primeportal.net/tanks/david_hale/challenger2_walk_1.htm
Peter and Mike (and many others too) have helped me out with alot of my questions and Dan really came through with the drawing of the muzzle ... Ain't this site great !! Now let's see some pictures as you build your kit on the site.

Ottawa hey, I just might be there also. Because I travel a lot for my work I can't ever be sure when I'm free.
Thanks for the link, it's great. I don't know about photos, I don't know how to post them and my work is not that great! Remember it's my first big one in ten years
Why don't we discuss by email? Here's mine

Hi! Rick,
Where are you? Do you think you can show me how to put a photo of my Challenegr on this site?
I am also thinking of getting a digital camera soon.
Bye for now,
Jim

its a big loop of safety wire for the muzzle reference sensor (senses gun tube warpage) and its there to keep it secure if it ever hits something hard enough to knock it loose it is a radioactive and highly sensitive item.

All it is ,is a pin on a wire that holds a plate down to allow the crew to checck and clean the mirrior on the MRS.
There is nothing radioactive underneath the cover.

Hi all
Normally the system on the Challenger 2 is the same as on most tanks that use the MRS sytem. We also have a MRS mirror on our muzzle of the Leopard 1A5BE.
MRS stands for Muzzle Reference System as some of you already said. The thing on the muzzle is nothing more then a small round mirror with an cover to protect it because it is not very solid.
How does it work??? The imaging system for the gunner holds a device that sends a laser beem to the mirror wich reflects back to his sight. The computer receives this information and is able to calculate the position of the gun and adjust ballistic values of the different amunitions. This is to make sure that the rounds go where the gunner aims. Why is all this??? Shooting heats up the gun. And because of weather effects (wind rain snow sun...) the gun will slightly bend. To adjust this phenomenon the came up with th MRS. To make sure you keep killing other tanks. 1mm can make a real difference at 1500m
That's the whole story hope you understand it....
