Panther would be tops in terms of armor, armament and mobility.

I would have to say the Hetzer...

I know the Tiger and Panther get all the glory, and I dont even really like German tanks. Gimme a Hulking Russian brute.

I like the hetzer cuz' it looks futureistic,...all those angles and that squat little shape.

By the way...is the Hetzer even German, I seem to recall it was a Czech design.

I would have to say the pzIV, backbone of the panzer corps, but Jagdpanther would also get my vote.

Even though I love the Tiger and the Panther influenced tank designs for years after the war. I would have to agree with Robert, the Pzkfw IV was the longest inservice tank and the best of WW2 for its role.

Even though it was a beast mechanically, I still love the King Tiger with the production/Henschel turret. It's hulking, menacing presence and the variety of camo finishes it wore just make it an endlessly interesting subject.

The Panther and the Tiger are may favorites. But the Pz IVs have been seen on every front and in any era of WW2, so I think Pz. IVs deserve the first place.

Define "best".

Tiger II was an amazing tank in terms of armour and armourment, bur expensive, immobile and mechanicaly too complicated for the battlefield.

Panzer IV - reliable, easier to maintain & manufacture, mobile. But less well armoured and armed.

Are F1 cars the best cars in the world? They have an incredible degree of techincal brilliance and are faster than pretty much any car on the planet, but you can't carry even 1 passenger, there is nowhere to put your luggage and they can't travel on anything but metalled roads...

Put it another way, the Sherman was, at best, a fairly good tank, but it won the war on the western front because it was relatively reliable, relatively mobile and could be produced in massive numbers. Does that make it superior to the Axis tanks of the time?

Ola

I think the Panzer 1 and all it`s variants. It is just a lovely small vehicle, It does not frighten you by sight. It`s more a vehicle you like to cudde like he cat
it.....
Eeehhmmm oh you mean the best tank.

Probably that would lie very close between the Panzer III / IV and the StuG III / IV

The subject of your post seems to indicate you are looking for opinions on the "best" German tank of the war which to me means which of the tanks performed the best. Where as the text in your message seems to be looking for people's "favorite" tank to model.

As to the former like others I would go with the Panther. On the latter question I would take the Luchs just because it's a tank I like.

I'd have to add my vote to Panther with the JagdPanther as best tank destroyer. Hard to argue with the PzKfw IV though. I believe they were even used in 1967 Mid-East war by Syrians? Got to love those tough "cats" though.

This is an age-old question that cannot be answered without first defining what you mean by "best." If logistical considerations play a factor, then you can take a look at such vehicles as the Panzer IV, or even venture into the tank destroyer/assault gun realm if you don't want to limit the discussion to turreted vehicles. However, if sole or primary emphasis is placed on the combat characteristics of a vehicle one vehicle becomes a clear favorite: the Panther. This vehicle achieved arguably the best balance of firepower/protection/mobility of the entire war (T-34/85 being the only close rival). It is often pointed to as the first example of the main battle tank because it could perform capably in virtually all roles demanded of a tank. Anecdotally speaking, whenever I see this question put to veteran tankers, the Panther is almost always the response (most common exception being understandable Russian loyalty to the T34).

The original and best, Panzer I.

Because it did not have huge armour and guns but was used in a way that made it effective.

You are a man I can talk with. there is absolutely no way you could not like that tank. It is small, It is lightarmored, It is not strong, but they put it into service at the best of it`s extend

Best I would have to go with the Jagdpanther. It mated the Panther "G" series of fairly good reliability with the unbelievable long 88 of the King Tiger and that thick sloped armor on the front made it just about invulnerable. I have met 3 guys that served on them and all 3 vote that vehicle as their favorite....survivability !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Besides, it looks absolutely wicked
