From the posts I've seen I get the impression it is a stripped M113 with a gun?

Guntruck-----What is it? Well, it is a very generic term that I believe originated during the vietnam war (Guntruck correct me here if I am wrong). The term "guntruck" was applied to US wheeled vehicles that were modified to carry extra weapons for convoy escort duty or troop support. Additional armament ranged anywhere from single or multiple M-60 or M2 machine guns to .30 cal gatlin guns or a WWII era quad M2 machine gun mount.

There were M113's that mounted a M-60 machine gun or gatlin gun(or other weapons) on each side to compliment the weapon on the commanders cupola but these were commonly referred to as "ACAV" or Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicles".

Vehicles typically used ranged from the US M151 series jeeps to 2 1/2 ton and 5 ton trucks. APC's weren't typically used for convoy escort due to their limited top speed and slow acceleration. There were cases of M113 hulls being mounted in the bed of 5 ton trucks though.

I could go on but feel other board members will have additional information to add. I hope this helps though.

In short, a guntruck is a wheeled vehicle (truck) with additional field supplied armor (often sheet metal) and non standard automati weapons. These can include the M1919 .30 cal Browning machine gun, M-2 .50 cal Browning in single, dual or quad mount, the M-60 mg in single or dual mount and in some apparently rare cases, the 7.62 mm minigun. In some cases a srtipped M-113 would be loaded onto a 6X6 to provide the gunners extra protection. These were used primarily for convoy escort in Viet Nam. (Full info can be found in Squadron's Guntrucks book.

SgtSauer's post above is correct - couldn't have written it better - or shorter . The term "Gun Truck" as coined applies to the Vietnam-era convoy escort vehicles that were modified cargo and light trucks. Just because a truck mounts a gun does not a "Gun Truck" make it.

During US Army deployment to Haiti in the mid-1980's, the 10th Mountain Division returned to the "hardened" truck concept and armored up a M923 5-ton cargo truck in the same fashion as the early Vietnam-era trucks. (Hint Hint for you guys itching to do something with that Italeri model kit - photo on cover of Museum Ordnance Magazine) Sharing the same lineage in concept as the Vietnam trucks, this qualifies it too as part of the "Gun Truck" line.

Charles,
No luck. The 5-ton was armored on the Cab and Bed with plate steel. The top of the bed also had the roof enclosed with chicken wire or metal link fencing to keep grenades and sachel charges from being thrown in. The roof was attached to the canvas support stakes. There were firing slots cut into the plate on the bed, no extra weapons added. Still would make a nice model and would be pretty easy to do.

Sorry, I don't have any photos. I saw it in a book about 10th Mountain in Haiti once. It did look cool though. I remember it was painted overall green if that helps. The bed had three firing slots down each side with a door at the back and one firing slot in the back door.

My thoughts exactly. If you looking for some pictures you can get the Squadron book Guntrucks. Its a great book filled with lots of pics. and info. Also, iam not sure when it is coming out but James Lyles is coming out with a guntruck book called "The Hard Ride."

Gunnie do you know when this book is coming out? I also want to get my hands on this book. He sent me a pic. of the front cover looks pretty sweet!

Well, like my old Granny used to say: "You can't have everything, where would you keep it?"
Still sounds like a fun project.
