Hello everybody

after one whole day of non modeling I picked it up and went further with my contest dio
Today I made the detailing of my ruin that stands in my diorama and I gave it the first paint
If I knew that scratchbuilding was so easy I started much earlier with it. The good thing is also that it`s very satisfying to do.
Don`t get me wrong it`s the first time I`m scratch building a ruin like this

This is really starting to take shape.

I think you should write a short article with pictures desribing each step. It would be most helpful.

Hello all here`s my costs list so far

Sniper:
I talked this over with Keith because my Sniper ia completely scratchbuilt and I had no idea what to raise for it. So Keith and I agreed to raise 25ct. for every part that came from the scratchbox I thought this was fair.
-Modeling Clay from the DAS brand Stolen from my little sister : 0.00ct
-The Sniper gun came from the scrapbox : 0.25ct
-The right(shooting) hand from the scrapbox: 0.25ct
-the complete leftarm came from the scrapbox: 0.25ct
-The head with helmet out of the scrapbox: 0.25ct
-The boots from the scrapbox: 0.25
-The shovel and the cannister (I believe): 0.25ct
Total Scratchbuilt Sniper: $ 1.50

The building and sidewalk
-Foam used for the building and sidewalk I got it from my father out of the hospital: 0.00ct
-Windowframe was made out of a couple of icelolly sticks wich I had laying around: 0.00ct
-Miliputt wich I had laying around for a long time: Oh heck I raise 0.25ct for that then my building got any value within
Total scratchbuilt houseruin: $0.25ct

Overall cost: $1.75

I can say for certain that this is the cheapest dio I`ve ever built

it's great to see how this contest inspires people to do research to get it just right, and to try out techniques they never tried before !
That partisan idea sounds good !

I envy your figure painting skills. I have everything finished except the figure. I scrachtbuilt it to fit the swing (hanging from a tree branch), and it looks just like what I had in mind. Only when it comes to painting : I made a total mess of the face, and stripped and repainted it four times already. Maybe there's something wrong with my oils : they don't cover the surface evenly. At some places they remain transpareant and let the layer underneath shine through. Maybe I'll strip it another time and just switch to acrylics... I'm getting mighty frustrated over this ! Maybe tonight (with a stiff drink) I'll have new inspiration, and the courage to strip it again and start all over !

about the inside of the house I`m not sure but it is going to be a stalingrad house so a painting of Lenin hanging on the wall would give it some more credit.
I still have to steal these stirringsticks at a trainstation in the restaurationarea for my wooden floor.
maybe a scratchbuilt table on one wall (the one without window) and some old papers scattered what used to be an livingroom. Maybe even an old radio
I still have to think about that.
Outside and inside the house will be a serious amount of rubble and debries to show the devastation of the bombardement wich the house has suffered.

about the street? I don`t know ....... well figure out that later

Jan, about those oils. My oils do the same and I´m definitely too hasty with them. I trust you primed your figure with flat acrylics or enamels? Those oils are great, only thing you need in patience to apply just a tiny amount at a time.. Thanks for the compliments on my painting skills..only thing I have to say is that pics in the web don´t tell the whole story. The figure in my Tulikomentoja! -dio, for example, looks like he has burn scars all over his face because the oil layer is so thick...but then again, what can you expect when you paint a face in twenty minutes...

Hey Faust. Have you tried to cover the blue foamy stuff with wall spackel? It comes in a tube from any D.I.Y. shop ready made up to a perfect consistantcy. The tube is about 30cm (1 foot) long. It spreads easy over the foam, fills out seams and gaps and can be scribed while soft. You have about 4 good working hours to spread it out to your satisfaction. Really effective looking. Thing is, as you have already scribed the bricks, you only need to spread it over the rest. I think you should try it out anyway. The blue foam is very porous and may not look so good when painted. You can make the spackel look good by smoothing it out with a damp sponge after about 1 hour. Drys rock hard after about 24 hours.

use the transparency the oils provide.

1. prime the face with acrylics (i.e desert yellow)
2. wash the face with dark brown oils (i.e. raw umber)
3. paint a very thin, transparent layer of oils in the final flesh colour

Should look great.
