Hi Matt,
I think the M59 "Long Tom" would be a great choice! I have been thinking to grab one myself. Just wish someone would make a nice M4 tractor for it.

Hey Matt
What about some of the AFV kits? They have some very nice towed guns. The 88 anti tank gun is quite good.Even the Flak 18 or 36.

The Italeri 105mm is a good simple and inexpensive starter. It's mostly the same as the 105mm in the M7 Priest tank.

I agree with Taylor.
AFV Club makes the very nice M59 LT, kit # 35009. They also make the M115 8" Howitzer, the modern M102 Howitzer for U.S. weapons and for German weapons the FH18 10.5cm Howitzer, Pak 43/41, Scheuntor 8.8cm Anti-Tank Gun, 8.8cm Flak 18 Anti-Aircraft Gun, and the LeFH18M 10.5mm Howitzer.
There are a few others out there as well from other manufacturers.

The one's suggested are great kits, but if you could narrow it down a bit more I might be able to suggest something.
WWII or Modern?
German or Other?
Towed or Self-propelled?
And finally, do you mind resin? There are several very good kits out there that are fairly easy to build.

Matt: Do something canadian...the tamyia 25 pounder is a nice (but old) kit. The figures are horrible too, but good to practice on.

What to build depends upon how complicated a build you want to start with. The AFV Club kits are first rate, but a bit on the expensive side (you get what you pay for, thuogh). I would go along with the suggestions of the Italeri 105mm howitzer or the Tamiya 25 pdr. Both can be built as Canadian equipment and both are reasonably good right out of the box. There is an upgrade set available for the 25 pdr from Eduard that provides a new gun shield and a bunch of other bits and I think I have seen a set for the 105mm as well. Build those two well and you are well positioned to build some of the more expensive models.

Hi Matt:
The suggestions the posts have given you are good. May I recommend the DML Pak 40 75mm anti tank gun (Fallschirmjager version).
The reason is that its a very good and accurate build but not with too many little pieces or overly complex.
I also concur with the rec for the AFV Club 155mm Long Tom or 8" Howitzer.
While the DML Flak 36 and AFV Club's recent kits (leFH18 105mm, Pak 43/41, Flak 18) kits are great, they might be a bit overly complex.

Also with the introduction of the Dragon 88mm the Tamiya 88 has dropped to around $15-20. It's a little more involved than the 105mm or 25pdr for a few bucks more

PSP makes a resin M4 HST -- nice, but very expensive these days.

The AFV Club Long Tom and 8in are good models, but have some pitfalls:
-- There are small and delicate parts, be careful.
-- They are difficult to build in the travel mode because of the way the bogies sit in the carriage.
-- There are numerous accuracy issues in the fine details.
They cannot be faulted for scale or quality of molding.
