The above kit is being relaeased by Academy. anyone got any details. I have a Humvee M966 TOW from Academy it is probable this kit repackaged . Not a bad kit. I havent actually seen a vehicle like this in my photo libary of Humvees anyone out there got one. I read in todays Telegraph that US forces are posting warning signs on their vehicles telling civilians to keep their distance or be shot so i imagine this type of vehicle is common now.

Already posted here yesterday:
https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/61855&page=1

This type truck is actully pretty scarce now. Most have fully uparmored M1114s and equivelant versions with full armor. This is an early version with minimal add-on armor.

As to the signs, they have been on the vehicles for a long time. We were using them when I was there in 2003. Most say something like, "Stay back 50 feet or you will be fired upon."

Here is an image that was posted a while ago:

From what others have said, such Humvees were used by the USMC and/or by the 82nd Airborne.

In addition to this new release of Humvee, I saw that Academy is planning on releasing another version of M2A2 OIF and a new M151A2 with TOW (not a Tamiya copy). We'll see how good they are. We can definitely use a better version of M2A2 than Tamiya's.

And here is an example of the sign that Gino was talking about:

It is really hard to read from the photo but it reads: "Do not pass. Stay back 100 meters."

P2G, I'm just getting a red x on your post.

BTW are those signs effective? Is it the practice to shoot anyone who disobeys the warning? Either way, won't those kind of signs alienate the civilians from the US forces? I have no experience in Iraq, but have fought in anti-guerrilla action here in SL, and we never used such signs. Troops were trained to watch for signs of suicide bombers, etc.

The signs are effective. The average civilian knows to stay out of our convoys. If they do not heed the warning, they are given a couple warning shots "across the bow" so to speak. If the vehicle continues to close with the convoy, it is fired upon. The population is not being alienated, they know it is for thier own safety and usually, car bombers are the only ones who do not obey the signs. We are also trained to spot car bombers, but it can be hard when the bomb is not visible in any way and hidden in the car.

I've found a better and bigger photo here. I hope that you can clearly see it now.

Satisfied? =)

Sorry, Gino, I misunderstood. Thought the signs were to warn off pedestrians during slow patrols or at VCPs. Makes sense if it's to keep cars away. Though we have had suicide vehicle attacks against convoys and checkpoints, most of the strikes have been by suicide bombers mingling with a crowd to assassinate an individual. More like it is in Israel.

P2G, I see it now, thanks. BTW, what are those long canvas-covered poles across the back of the Humvee?

They look like rolled up stretchers.

I'll let you know that this isn't a coincidence but rather Murphy's Law of Modelling. It used to be that the second you finished (or even just bought) a model, a better version came out. Now with news, it seems to be getting better .

Cookie,
Here is another photo of Humvee that looks almost exactly like the one released by Academy. Photo was taken in Afghanistan in April, 2004. "Soldiers of the 25th Infantry Division’s 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment pass through a valley near Orgun-e, Afghanistan. "

When using Night Vison Goggles (NVGs), they are taped over so they are not accidentally turned on. Also so you have no light reflecting off of them. Also notice that the standard blackout drive light on the left side is replaced with an IR light to be used with the NVGs as well. The left sied light has the lower portion w/o tape to be a blackout drive light and shine a small cone of light just in front of the driver.

With regards to the "do not pass stay back 100 meters " sign, I think a lot of people would have trouble reading that at a distance of over 100 meters ...
