Tamiya is the only game in town, as far as the Churchill in 1/35 is concerned. They do the Mk VII in two versions, the standard gun tank or the Crocodile flame thrower. With the earlier Croc you can always omit the armoured trailer to do the normal one. However, the standard tank does come with extra crew figures, including a French peasant with a little cart.

Is there any aftermarket kits designed so you can make the AVRE, mortar firing variant?? I always loved the look of those. Firing "flying dustbins" at bunkers, whooo hoo! Thats what I should have asked for in the FSM most wanted survey.

Bison, check this feature here on ArmoramA, https://armorama.kitmaker.net//features/87

I'm fairly sure there are (or were) others around, at least to backdate the kit to a Mk IV.

Good morning gentlemen...is anyone else irked over the fact that Tamiya has been recycling 20 year old kits, with the addition of a new sprue of figures, and advertising them as new.........at the cost of about $20.00(US) more? They did this with the Churchill which I just bought and the Bren Gun carrier...TWICE! I love Tamiya...but I think they are feeling the competition from Acadamy and AFV Club! What do you think? Jeff

The Churchill with the new figures is a good kit and you shouldn't have much trouble finding it, Andy. I think the tank itself is pretty good for a late '70s release. I have to admit that when I bought mine I had at first expected the tank to be new (the kit# was a new one and the copyright date was 1996) so I was a little disappointed when I saw 1977 written into the hull of the Churchill. Tamiya doesn't appear to advertise that the kit itself is old-tooling, which isn't great for most people. Now, with this site and more knowledge of older releases I wouldn't have trouble determining if the kit was new or not, but I doubt the majority of modellers have this luxury. At any rate, the Churchill is designed to be motorized, but this actually works out quite well as you can make the top half of the hull removable. It is stuck in well with polycaps and there is no seam visible, so it ends up helping a lot with painting, since you can leave the top (with the big fenders that would normally get in the way) off.

Hi Bison...Yes there was a kit out there ...It was by KK castings....Not bad at all for the parts you get in the kit ...A new turret and front end ..along with the square side doors...What stopped me from finishing this kit is that I could never find a good picture showing the sliding hatch for the poor crewman who had to reload this flying dustbin from the outside...Hope he got hazardous duty pay for that!!...other than that there is alot of scratch building to do on the hull to back date it to a Mark IV...Hey the turret even has an interior!! I finally thought I would make a gun tank out of it trying to turn it into a markVI ..I take it out of the box every once and a while and look at it and say I'll finish it soon...YEAH RIGHT..
